There are a lot of issues here; monitor calibration of the computer as well as the overlay of the graphics card that may be used by the software DVD application. Some software applications also have picture control and some presets for how the picture can look.
Depending on the software playback options, a computer monitor is progressive. If the sources were interlace then there could be some frame blending etc. softening the image.
In addition to monitor calibration there is a difference in black and white level ranges for digital television and graphics and computers. Digital television is 16RGB for black and 235 for white. Computers and graphics use the full 0-255 range.
Then there is the default gamma mode – PC and television use 2.2 where Mac defaults to 1.8.
All of these can have a play in why differences exist.

Use FluidMotion timewarp. There should be a preset for interlace to progressive.

Has one of your clips run out of media on one of the tracks?

You ae correct, the format determines the color space, but don’t forget 8 bit and 10 bit!

Select all tracks, mark a start and end on the entire sequence and select “remove match frame edits” from the either the clip or bin menu (I can’t remember which one).

You can do the shots, but effects will be lost (other than simple dissolves and fades) because the EDL needs to be used to convert the frame rates. Once should always edit at the rate of the final conform in order to get the benefit of a total conform. I realize that in some cases this is not possible…

with the latest release, go to REFORMAT category of effects, and drop either the 16:9 letterbox on it or the pan & scan effect. If letterbox, either drop it on the entire sequence if everything is 16:9, or on individual clips. If you don’t want letterbox, drop a center crop. If you want control over which part of the image will remain part of the image, then use the pan & scan tool. Select source 16:9 anamorphic and target 4:3. And then move the grid to your desired position – zoom, and keyframes also available.

You could ask the lab/facility that did the telecine transfer and dailies if they have some academy leader transferred to tape. If nothing else, just slug in a 8 second element with a single frame of 1K tone at the 6 second mark (2 seconds before first frame of picture (FFOP)). If using 35mm, then it is 12+00 feet total. If using timecode, make sure to use NDF30 or 24TC to calculate – DF should work for timings under 1 minute, but better to be safe than sorry.
