Sorenson Squeeze includes MPEG2 encoding as one of its options as well as a host of a lot of other Web, DVD, HD-DVD, type encoding. You should be able to find just an MPEG2 encoder that accepts QuickTime as an input if that is all you need.

What do you mean by bouncy? Does it skip? If so it probably means the data rate was set to high. Lower the data rate and try again.

MXF is not a codec. It is a metadata wrapper around whatever codec is being used. In he case of the HVX200, it is native DVCPRO HD (codec) wrapped with MXF wrapper for timecode and other metadata types.

When in the Avid, you are editing naively with the DVCPRO HD Codec. When it comes time to do a DVD, it will need to encoded to a DVD compliant format such as MPEG2 for standard definition.

You can try exporting a QT reference of the sequence (just points to the Avid media) and encode in Sorenson Squeeze or other type MPEG2 encoder that supports QuickTime as an input. From there, create SD MPEG2 with the 16:9 flag on for the aspect ratio control.

Export QT ref from Avid as 4:3 aspect ratio as I am assuming the sources are anamorphic. In the MPEG2 settings for video, there is a drop down menu selection for 4:3 or 16:9. Select 16:9. This will encode the flag indicating that the DVD player needs to letterbox or not depending on the settings for the monitor attached.

I don’t know why it is taking so long to encode. Are you using the NTSC_Large preset?

You can take an existing file found in the video-ts folder of an already created DVD and edit it to have the flag using an application called IfoEdit. Do a Google search and you will find it. It is a windows app.

I would then edit in 23.976 – Advantages are frame accuracy for film lists. frame accurate versus +/- 1 frame. And for video workflows, the playback will have a continuous 2:3 pulldown cadence for easier MPEG encoding and other downstream processes.

Project type depends on how you audio is coming in. Is it sync on tape or are you syncing in Avid? If syncing in Avid, what sample rate?

Workflow wise, edit either native 24fps or 23.976 (depending on audio answer above). The FLEx file will contain all the timecode and KeyKode as needed.

Once you cut the offline, export an EDL or a Pull list. EDL from EDL Manager (timecode based) or a Pull List (timecode and KeyKode based from Avid FilmScribe).

The colorist can re-transfer back to the same timecode for you to do a batch capture from your original timeline or have the colorist just re-transfer away and give you a new FLEx file. Import new FLEx file, relink sequence to new FLEx file events and use “relnk by KeyKode. Sequence will relink to new clips. Batch capture.

When you subclip each portion of the sequence, it will create a sequence. But as long as each of those sequences are single events, you can highlight all of those sub sequences and select AutoSync. They will become subclips that will now work as source clip showing out of sync offsets, etc.

What I mean by metadata tracking is the ability to track timecode, KeyKode, etc.
