  • There is no automation or scripting within Media Composer as it’s based on the very notion that an editor makes every editorial decision which was certainly the case when the MC was first conceived and developed.

That being said, through the decades, and as picture quality increased to the point of being a deliverable, the need to create the deliverables has also been on the rise which is a very reasonable request. I was at a facility once that had 7 Media 100 stations lined up each one with scripted automation to version the programming interstitials on the file by pulling an Excel file off the server, based on the latest program lineup and times, import into the graphics tool, update sequence, pass on to next step, etc. literally hundreds of these were being updated at these seven station to create the deliverable at the end that was then posted on the server to air. Not one of those seven Media 100 stations was being operated by a user. By the way, this was about 10 years ago. At the time, they wanted to replace Media 100 with Media Composer, and asked whether Media Composer could do that… the answer was “uh no…” and they stayed on Media 100. I wonder what they are using today in the HD world and all…

Assuming a DVD delivery, it does not matter. For example, all Hollywood movies on DVD are 23.976 progressive on disc – the player turns it into a compatible NTSC signal. The same for 29.97 – the frame rate would be there, but the content frames would be progressive, they would just play as interlace.

EDLs count +1 on the OUT by EDL specification.

But that what I’m saying, you can keep it progressive as 29.97p and it will look fine on a CRT as well as interlace monitors. No need to introduce interlace into the file at all.

Just keep in mind that progressive content will always look good on an interlace monitor while interlace on a progressive monitor is not always the case.

  • And AutoSync since v6 allows you to keep the original audio on the video file and add the double system sound as additional tracks.

video is about 1 hour but has all workflows covered including double system, RXCPro, AMA, and round trip.

There is a Red AMA Plug-in you need to download:

Don’t hit “finish”. You need to select “next” and go through the steps selecting “fixed width” and then “text”.

This works fairly well for single line EDL’s. but can get a little messy with comments and effect commands if they are still there. Also keep in mind that a comment which may carry a clip name is on its own line, making sort operations a pain if at all possible. If this is related to your original request, you still won’t have a duration defined unless someone knows how to create a formula for doing so, or a plug-in exists that can be added. If you’re going down that route, an EDL does not declare its frame rate, so be sure that is part of the formula.

Well assuming that picture and sound need to remain in sync, the Media Composer’s Mix & Match should do the trick. Open your 30fps (29.97) in its own matching project format such as 1080i/59.93, 29.97p. NTSC, etc.

Once that is done, from your 25fps project, open the 30fps bin. Media Composer automatically applies a motion adapter to adjust picture without changing original duration (sync remains). If there is still a quality issue, and you are capturing form tape sources or sources that provide an HD-SDI signal, you could look at a standards conversion with Teranex from Black Magic as your I/O device. Or have a facility do it as a service.

If you want to change the frame rate with a 1:1 or frame to frame conversion, then that is another matter. The result here would be a 20% slomo on the footage meaning if audio went untouched, it would immediately go out of sync. One could always change the sample rate to trick Media Composer into changing its time. This would be done by stripping the audio out as a BWF file, opening it in a free product like Wave Agent and changing the sample rate accordingly. I am not awake enough yet to do the math.

  • Rosie –

My whole domain is down for the next 4 days or so – preventing me from updating you. But I did find a workaround method for the decompose bug for imported material, and created a TAB file, but the next thing you would have to deal with it the fact that the purpose of decompose is to create an optimized list of sources for reapture, import, etc. So with that as the design goal, it will only list any one source once combining the total frames as needed for what was used, rather than each time it is used as its own clip.
