    Hi,

I’ve been scouring the internet for a while trying to find the complete workflow for Avid Media Composer 5 and RED Scarlet footage.
I read somewhere that the footage can just be linked via AMA, but it’s not working for me. Is there a plugin I should install first? I’ve looked on AVID and RED’s websites, but found nothing. AVID did have a plugin, but it wouldn’t work with my version of AVID. Do I need to upgrade to work with RED footage? To do that I’d have to upgrade my OS to Lion, which I’d rather avoid, if at all possible.

Really what I’d like, if anyone can point me to it, is a good video tutorial showing the full workflow for Avid and Red.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Olaf

I’m using Avid Media Composer 5.0.3 on a Mac 10.6.8

    https://www.avid.com/red

video is about 1 hour but has all workflows covered including double system, RXCPro, AMA, and round trip.

There is a Red AMA Plug-in you need to download:

    Thanks for your help guys.
The plugin you both send me a link to is the one I had already downloaded, but when I try to install it, I get the following error message:

    No suppported editors
    The installation failed!
No compatible Avid editor could be found.
This AMA plug-in installer is compatible with:
    Avid Media Composer 5.5.1~7.0.0
    Avid Symmphony 5.5.1~7.0.0

That message seems to be saying that the plugin only works for AMC 5.5, even though above the link where I downloaded it on the Avid website, they say it’s compatible with AMC 5.0
Not sure what’s going on here…

I think v5 did not need the plugin, but had R3D AMA built in to the application. However, that’s way before there was a Scarlet, so I suspect that your MC5 would AMA Red One files, but not Red Scarlet or Epic files.

Epic and Scarlet AMA support came with V6 of MC.
On a Mac you could AMA to the QT Ref files and that would work but you don’t get access to the RAW metadata like you do with AMA to the R3D files direct.

Thanks for all your help, everyone.
Pat – where can I find the QT ref. files? Do I have to create them in RED Cine X?

If I’m doing an offline – online workflow and want to work first in DNX36, then revert back to the original 4K footage, what’s the best workflow?
Would those QT ref. files relink without any problems to that original footage, or should I use RED Cine X to covert to DNX36?

Thanks again for all your help. It looks like a lot of research still needs to be done, but at least now I know there is no direct AMA workflow with AMC 5 and RED Scarlet footage – it’s not just my computer.

This Redcine X workflow works. I’ve done it before on MC 5.5 with EPIC.

Thanks Brendan. That looks really helpful.
I assume this workflow will work similarly for AMC 5.0.3?

Yes, it should work in 5.0.3 as well.

Thanks again everyone for your input on this.

I did a test today by exporting MXF files from RED Cine X, then copying them to the Avid MediaFiles folder, then using the Media Tool inside Avid to add them to the project.

Now I’m stuck. How do I then relink the footage back to the original 4K material for online?
All the tutorials and forums I’ve found talk about the process using AMA, which I can’t do with this version of Avid.
