Keep in mind that editing directly from a single 60 minute source clip via AMA (or any single clip longer than 10 minutes or so) can affect overall performance while editing just to get to that 20 minute timeline. This is why it is such a gray area for many users. There is a lot of different criteria that affects a transcode all before or after decision.

.new files are created by transcoding or consolidating an existing masterclip or subclip or even sequence somewhere in the process. This “shouldn’t” affect sync, but certainly could affect audio being offline on one system or another as the process creates new media that may not be available on both systems.

I would add any audio file, especially BWF also be imported to Shane’s succinct rule of thumb.

Just out of curiosity/test… try copying the project folder to the internal drive and try again from there from within Media Composer.

Is the project on the C: drive and if so, is that the one that Mac HFS formatted?

There’s a tipping point as Shane points out that will be different based on code type, drive speed, drive connection speed, resolutions, etc. Native codecs have better performance than non-native. Native codecs can be seen when doing a transcode and you see the list of what you can transcode to. For example, ProRes has recently been made a native codec. Anything else is being managed by the plug-in that creates another layer to play through.

Add to that the need for multicam or not, etc. will usually drive a decision to transcode up front, or at the end. H.264 is not a native codec, and as a codec is CPU intensive, so don’t expect a lot of “performance” with longer clips and bigger projects.

What are the permissions set to on the project folder at the operating system level?

I am assuming you know that Media Composer cannot do a 4K finish. It tops out at 1920 x 1080. If that is not the scenario, then it is a matter of exporting an EDL back to Redcine X and conforming back to the original R3D and exporting in a higher DNxHD resolution.

Yes, it should work in 5.0.3 as well.
