  • On a somewhat related note – I have eliminated .mov from most of my workflow. From Media Composer, starting with a fully unrendered timeline, exporting as MXF OP1a (DNxHD /HR codec of choice) is a faster process with fewer steps compared to rendering, mix-downs, etc. See second half of my blog with some time examples and other benefits:

Something to consider in the workflow. With later versions of MC, AMA export is also part of normal export so in theory, you should be able to create a “send to” right to your watch folder from the bin.

  • Also, the .1% slow down was not so much a shortcut than a solution allowing existing television owners to not have to buy new ones in an age where a new TV was very expensive. In 1954 the average color TV cost $1,000 and the average salary was $3,200.

Average salary today is ~$52,000 (minimum wage earners at $15,000) and the average worldwide TV cost for 4K is still about the same ($1,162).

Color TV did not outsell B&W TV’s till the mid-70’s.

Those were imported versus AMA linked which is why it was 01:00:00:00 versus 00:00:00:00. In Resolve you can select those clips and have it use a different timecode that you enter, in this case 00:00:00:00. Or conversely, in Media Composer, duplicate the START column for all clips and copy to AuxTC1 (or 2, 3, etc.), change the DSLR ones that are wrong to 00:00:00:00 and export an EDL versus an AAF. If sequence has effects you want to preserve and conform then EDL will not be the best solution.

First thing is that your source footage is 2.4.0:1 and you are editing in 16:9. Using “stretch means the aspect ratio is not correct. In order to see 2.40 you would have to select letterbox/pillarbox in the reformat menu at the bottom. I suspect you are mastering as 2.40 letterbox or delivery?

Another setting to check in Media Creations – it’s no longer called “debayer” but it allows you to select 1/2, 1/2 good, 1/4, etc. which will give you a bit more performance should you need it.

When editing this way, and you are done – no need to relink or change any settings on the source (i your happy with your color settings). Any FrameFlex changes would be on the timeline should you want to re-compose a shot, etc. Just remember to reset your Media Creating settings to Full before transcoding or final master and delivery.

Have you tried exporting the channels as separate WAV files and seeing if DCP-O-Matic is any happier?

For audio, I would export 6 separate tracks labeled as needed for the 5.1. Those will get managed in the DCP creation program. I agree with 24bit, 48kHz.

For the picture, make sure you are delivering whatever color space they want to have a starting point – be it Rec 709, or other and what expected black and white levels are. Many DCP applications can take in a MOV or MXF file to start. All o them take sequential files of some type like TIFF or DPX.

What you don’t mention is frame rate – DCP is 24.000fps. If your source is 23.976, and again depending on the application being used, can deal with the speed up and audio correction. Other’s expect the sources to be at the proper rate.

Same goes or subtitles or descriptive track. The timing of sources is 24.000fps.

Work with whoever is creating your DCP to get the proper deliverables.

iZotope tools are great for audio clean up if you have them or can afford them. Here are tutorials on different repairs:

I was going to try testing myself. Which one of these test footage clips match your sources?

Avid’s sync by waveform works, but is a pain to use when you have a lot of dailies as the process does not identify which clips belong together, you have to select each pair. You also want to consider whether you want to syn sync by 1/4 frame or not, how you work with sound post, etc.

You can’t import OP1a, you can only link to it via AMA. Or option-drag them into a bin should default to the MXF AMA plug-in. WOuld be a nice feature that if dragged for import that MC prompt for you try a link rather than fail.
