  • Media Composer does not support CDL as part of EDL import, only export. CDL values can come in via an ALE in a dailies process but not as an EDL. Maybe, and I mean maybe, importing EDL into Resolve and exporting an AAF might work, but I wouldn’t bet on it. Worth a try though.

Importing for video media is becoming a thing of the past as many codecs require a certain plug-in to link to beforehand using AMA. AMA linking is faster than import but has the one extra step. Link, then transcode to your desired target codec/data rate. Even the small extra step is faster as transcoding uses all cores to create new media versus the single core import uses.

  • Just keep in mind that ARRIRAW Converter does not output MXF or MOV wrapped DNxHD/HR. It can export MOV wrapped ProRes if you want to go that route. Resolve and other dailies type programs will export MXF OP1a, MXF OPatom (Avid native format) as DNxHD or DNxHR.

  • These are most likely ARRIRAW file wrapped in an MXF container and is not supported by Media Composer. MXF is just a wrapper and the MXF plug-in needs to support both wrapper and codec withing. So MXF wrapped DNxHD, XDCAM to, etc. are all fine.

For ARRI MXF you will need to go through a dailies process in a an application that supports it, Resolve, Arri Converter, etc.

  • But you can see it above the source/record monitors as with other time-based counters:

    Select:

And how it looks side by the side with the old frame counter:

  • You need to use the “Frame Count Start” column for that and you can have it start at any value you want. It is a bit confusing to have the old method still in there, but that’s the way it was implemented. ☺

  • Nothing should have really changed MC wise for the workflow unless a bug was introduced.

Media Composer, like all other applications, have to use the RED SDK to decode R3D files. The difference is, all other applications give you full control over the RAW parameters, but MC is still only a subset. Other applications will let you trim R3D files as well.

I would see why decompose is not working – Typically its’ a decompose + handles and it should create new master clips which is what you would normally recapture with. Drop all those clips into a timeline, export CMX, back to Redcine (as you do) but consider a RED trim pass rather than making DNxHD. AMA those and relink giving you control over source parameters as well as resolution should you need to resize, etc.

Keep MPEG Streamclip out of the workflow. AMA link and transcode to a low data rate proxy (DNxHD 36). Edit away. Relink sequence back you camera masters and transcode sequence to finishing codec like 115 or above.

Not that I know of. MC does not easily allow for scripting. Clip color is at the metadata level in the bin, not at the essence level at the directory level. Even ALE exports don’t support Color. The column is annoyingly there, but there is no value. AAF might be able to do it but there is no real mechanism for AAF export to batch export for each clip (well there used to be something called AFE that sort of did).
