Hardware is best, especially if time is a factor. ☺

But Resolve did introduce a very high-quality super scale option to the latest version which you might want to try. It does take time to render… Seeing as they own Teranex, I wonder if some of those algorithms were used in software. Always worth a try:

  • That is Media Composer’s new Live Timeline functionality:

How and what are you exporting? Are you creating H.264 straight out of Media Composer? From the sounds of the required time to do so, this would seem to be the case. Avid still uses outdated 32bit QuickTime engines for export which don’t have a lot of control and take forever to process. The best bet is to use third-party encoders like:

    • Sorenson (no longer developed but still works)
    • Apple Compressor
    • Adobe Media Encoder
    • Handbrake
    • MPEGSTreamclip (I’ve had problems with this one and has not been updated in years, but seems to work for some folks)
    • FFMPEG (find a nice GUI via a google search)

I use Adobe Media Encoder. In either case, you will want to export either a QuickTime using “Same as Source” or an MXF OP1a export. Both of these will be encoded into your deliverable from one of the apps above. Adobe, Apple, and Sorenson easily support the MXF OP1a export. The two-step process is still way faster than letting MC using QuickTime do the work.

  • “You can only relink to master in Avid if they were made in Avid.”

This is not always true. If you made dailies in Resolve using Clip Filename as it should have been done, then you can conform by linking back to camera originals. What Media Composer does not support is embedded reel names. Cameras like ARRI Alexa and RED, for example, use an abbreviated 8 character REEL name that is a subset of the clip file name when combined with the timecode make it unique. Media Composer has yet to support embedded reel names in these formats via AMA.

  • I would keep using Sorenson till it no longer works or no longer meets your needs. Personally, I use Adobe Media Encoder, actively updated with lots of useful functionality.

Low budgets are always challenging. On the handful of features I’ve edited, I’ve always been my own assistant. But in this scenario, if a short, you and the editor can decide to forego the offline/online process and link in Media Composer and work at a finishing quality like DNxHD 175x (assuming it’s HD or finishing at HD). This takes a little pressure off, but it is always wise to make sure you’re covered to be able to get back to any source or move to a different system for color and finishing if needed.

As suggested, find someone to spend a few hours with you. It’s not difficult, just detailed and you want to make sure it’s done correctly.

I would recommend downloading the fully functioning 30-day free trial of Media Composer and doing the work there. This way you can go back to any of the sources if needed once the synced clips are created. It may be a little daunting at first but probably your best bet. If not, look to tools like Resolve that is one of the products used in creating dailies and metadata management.

  • That is an interesting situation. When the input frame size is less than or equal to project timeline size, then FrameFlex has no real value anyway. In an ideal world, they would transcode to DNxHR (you choose data rate) preserving original resolution and aspect ratio and let you decide how to deal with it using FrameFlex.

Are the AMA links still in the project? How did you create the proxies – in Media Composer or somewhere else? If in MC, and all AMA links are still there, you can hide your transcoded mediafiles folder before launching (add xx in front of the folder name) and see if it reconnects to the AMA linked clips

Or if the AMA link clips are still online, do a “relink to selected” from your sequence to the highlighted AMA clips.
