Strange. I am running FCP 7 and I have updated to 6.0.5 AJA drivers. Playing out over HD-SDI to a monitor is now choking FCP, causing the dreaded beach ball and ultimately a crash. I cannot use FCP unless I turn off external video.

    Do you have after effects?

If so, you can bring the footage into AE and render out 10bit DPX files.

If you download the Cineform plug for Quicktime, you should be able work native in Color with the Quicktimes. You can then render out of Color to Uncompressed. It all depends on how you’re finishing.

  • [John Fishback] ” Do you have both monitors in your rental stock? If so, put hehem side-by-side and see how they compare. If there’s a chance you will need to travel the monitor, then I’d suggest the Panny.

I do, and I have. The 1710 looks pretty awesome, but I am more concerned with proper grading monitors. What “LOOKS” good may not necessarily be better suited to grading. Although, I think with a majority of LCDs and Plasmas all but replacing CRTs in the home, perhaps grading on a high quality LCD isn’t such a bad idea…

I still like the idea of 14″ BVM CRT HD w/SDI and Consumer Plasma for covering all angles but I am trying to keep things at a nice budget.

If you’re looking to put on a DVD to screen on a computer, you may as well compress to H264 quicktime at around 320×240. Not exactly sure how much you can get on a DVD-DL, but you may be able to fit it all. Easier solution would be to use multiple DVD’s considering the director may need to make critical decisions and low rez proxies can sometimes mask things like softfocus etc.

  • I would rather not nest, because I have 4 reels at 25 min each of 4:4:4 RGB LOG files. Won’t rendering bring me down to 8bit and just eat up gobs of space?

  • I have over 3TB of space on a raid 5 array. NO renders, as this is a cuts only sequence with native footage.

Here’s a real question for the final cut pro experts out there. When you export using compressor, does FCP create a reference movie???

I was under the impression that FCP could not render 10bit effects. Thanks for clearing that up!
