Buying a Monitor – BTLH-1710 or Sony 14″BVM w/ SDI
Looking to pick up a new monitor for my set up Final Cut Pro/Kona 3/Color set up. I think I am leaning towards the 14″ BVM and a client Plasma, but I am wondering (since the clients aren’t exactly busting down the door at the moment!) if a 1710 would be a suitable dual purpose monitor (grading and viewing). Just looking for opinions…

as long as the Sony does HD and SD I would do that instead of the panasonic.

Check out Flanders Scientific (They have an ad that shows up along thes side here) and/or TV Logic LCD monitors. They are currently the state-of-the-art for color correction in LCD. They are the first that can accurately match a CRT in color accuracy and Black levels. I have a TV logic and it’s great.

We have a Panny 17″ for our field package and have put it side-by-side with our TVLogic edit suite monitor. It looks very good in comparison. I have an older Sony BVM monitor which is very nice. You’re probably fine with either choice. Do you have both monitors in your rental stock? If so, put hehem side-by-side and see how they compare. If there’s a chance you will need to travel the monitor, then I’d suggest the Panny.

“I do, and I have. The 1710 looks pretty awesome, but I am more concerned with proper grading monitors. What “LOOKS” good may not necessarily be better suited to grading. Although, I think with a majority of LCDs and Plasmas all but replacing CRTs in the home, perhaps grading on a high quality LCD isn’t such a bad idea…
I still like the idea of 14″ BVM CRT HD w/SDI and Consumer Plasma for covering all angles but I am trying to keep things at a nice budget.

Look at the FSI 1760W or 2450W depending on your budget. We have two of the 2450W and one 1760W here and I we’re just completing construction on 8 new HD suites for a local broadcaster with the 2450W installed in all of those. Outstanding monitors at an incredible price.
