  • Question about DPX file management

Posted by Michael Nichols on July 30, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Anyone working with DPX’s out there feel free to chime in!

I have my DPX stacks in folders relative to their lab roll and edit number as per my scan EDL.

Is this a good way to keep these organized? I was thinking of removing the files from the “Scan number” folder and just keeping all the DPX files per lab roll in their respective folder.

My current set up is shown in the attached images.

You don’t want folders with 8000 DPX files in them. Keep them exactly like the scan house gave them to you.

the more organized and sub-foldered you stay with image sequences, the safer. 1 misplaced file can ruin everything.

    That’s what I figured. Thanks!

In your picture A_&, 035_NEW etc are lab rolls and 001, 003 and so on, are clip numbers? Or is it the other way around.

How has this folder structure been created? By a scanner? If so, its best to leave it undisturbed. If you were to rescan something, the scanner will automatically overwrite the old ones by identifying the folder structure it created. Else, you have dupe files.

Speaking of DPX, and sorry if this is off-topic, but how is it to work with this in a Final Cut Pro / After Effects scenario today for online of TVC’s (i.e. we’re talking limited amounts of media)?
