    Hi,

I have following question: I have 18 hours of footage of a Documentary Film, and I wanna compress the raw material (Shot on DVX100B – Progressive PAL) into a format, that I can burn all on one DVD (Data DVD), so the two other directors can watch it on their computers.

It can be smaller and low resolution.

Which codec and what settings are the best for this job? It’s a lot footage in FCP, so I have to compress it from out FFCP or Compressor.

Thanx a lot for the Help!!!!!

    Greetz,

    Sascha

    Hi

Ishhh thats a lot of footage. Exported it as an QT file and then recompress into DIV x – Thats what I would do. U keep your quality and they can see it the way it was shot – Well as close as possible to the original anyway !

If you’re looking to put on a DVD to screen on a computer, you may as well compress to H264 quicktime at around 320×240. Not exactly sure how much you can get on a DVD-DL, but you may be able to fit it all. Easier solution would be to use multiple DVD’s considering the director may need to make critical decisions and low rez proxies can sometimes mask things like softfocus etc.

Yeah, I thought about it, but I create a huge amount of data, first exporting it out of FCP, and then again encoding it. Also it takes more time, so I was hoping for a way, to encode it directly from FCP or Compressor.

The quickest way will involve exporting reference movies of your footage, buying an Elgato Turbo, and compressing them to h.264.

But if that’s not possible, I second Dave’s suggestion of a wand, heh 😉

    Hi Dave,

luckily I live in the holy land, where we don’t need Magic Wands from American Films-we just use the Western Wall in Jerusalem 😉 But for now, I will use Compressor – found a reasonable good setting: Web Download/H.264/Medium Quality. It gives me the size I was looking for, with a very reasonable resolution. It will do the job, as good as the wand. Beside that, I prefer using my wand for different things than work.

May the Shwartz be with you!

The “H264 100 Kbps” Preset in Compressor allows you to put 18 hours footage in a CD.
You have a DVD or DL-DVD, so you can increase a lot the size and the fps.
    Don’t expect a fast encodind.

Yes, a DVD DL Burner. I think the H.264 Quicktime 7 – Medium Quality 300kbps setting should do a good job.
    Thanx for the advice.
