January 13, 2011 at 3:09 pm in reply to: HD Map Animation in AVID – Largest file size possible? If your editor uses the Pan and Zoom effect Avid won’t scale the picture down. I believe the maximum size is 4000 x 4000 pixels.
That said, this is better done in After Effect or Boris or a similar compositing program. If you need to scale multiple layers together (the animation from A – B while you zoom in on the map, for example) Avid really doesn’t do that well. And Pan and Zoom doesn’t recognize alpha channels, either.

I get random dings too – I thought it was my keyboard acting up. Try clicking a couple bins, the source monitor, than the record monitor/timeline and try the lift/extract shortcuts again. See if it works.
I’ve found that clicking a bin or two or deselecting whatever is highlighted in a bin seems to snap Avid out of this behavior.

If you get a white screen when you import into Avid then you’re missing the codec to play those files. Open one of them in Quicktime – you’ll probably get a white screen there too. Hit Ctrl+I to open the Movie Inspector. Tell us what it lists under Format for the codec.

[Chris Baker] “1. On my old system I could zoom in and out of the timeline using the up and down arrow keys. They don’t work like this anymore and I don’t see anything in the help section or any of the tools. Very annoying for navigation purposes.”
Choose Menu to Button Reassignment in the Command Palette. Click the Up/Down arrow on your Keyboard settings, then go to the fast menu of your timeline and choose More Detail/Less Detail. That will map Zoom In To Timeline and Zoom Out of Timeline to your Up/Down arrows.
[Chris Baker] “2. Previous and Next edit buttons automatically open the trim tool. I find this annoying for speedy navigation. I used to do this all the time and then be able to hit plus or minus x frames to go to a specific location in the clip. Now if I do this I accidently trim the clip. I know its only an extra key stroke but still.”
Map Rewind and Fast Forward to these. Then they’ll function like before.
[Chris Baker] “3. Adjusting individual track heights. Now it seems I just have Command k and l to expand or contract the track sizes, I find this odd especially with Avid.”
Hold Ctrl (on a PC – not sure on a Mac) and grab the bottom of the track – pull it down or up to make the track larger or smaller. Note, your mouse pointer doesn’t change like it used to but the function is still the same.
[Chris Baker] “4. Wave form was there then disappeared. I’m sure this is a setting or something but I can’t seem to get it back. Kinda need it for editing a music piece.”
Make sure you don’t have “Show Marked Waveforms” turned on in your Timeline settings. Also, check you timeline fast menu to see if you have Waveforms turned on via track basis. If so, click the little arrow in the upper left of your timeline and turn on waveforms for your individual tracks.

Are you working on Media Composer 5? If so, these are motion adapters that are converting the footage from one frame rate to another. Avid automatically adds them if you open footage from a project with a different frame rate. Or the editor took interlaced footage and made it progressive with motion adapters.

Yes. Just transfer the project file/bins over to the Mac system and point the Avid to it (or put it in an existing Avid Projects folder).
The media is compatible too.

I think you misread what I typed (and what I typed wasn’t very clear). You shouldn’t have a MEDIA folder inside your numbered folder – I was saying that’s where you media goes. Sorry about the confusion.
You should have:
M:\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1\.mxf files
M:\OMFI MediaFiles\.omf media
Your project file (you can put this where ever you want). If you don’t have a space between the words “Avid” and “MediaFiles”, Avid won’t see your media. So if it’s AvidMediaFiles -> Media will be offline. If you have your .mxf files inside a MEDIA folder inside your numbered folders, Avid won’t see your media.
Also, when you open Avid go to your Media Creation settings and make sure Filter Drives Based on Resolution is unchecked, and uncheck Filter System Drive and Filter Launch Drive. Then try to rescan your databases (File–>Reload Media Databases). That should force a rescan, or close Avid, delete the database files, then relaunch Avid.

November 30, 2010 at 8:38 pm in reply to: Can’t get into avid!!! Need guidence, Please! Are you on a Mac or a PC?
Either way, you need to go to the folder where the program is installed and double click the executable. Sounds like your shortcut went haywire.

The media must be in a certain file structure on the root of your drive. For example, if the media is now on the M: drive, it should be here:
M:\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1\[MEDIA – .mxf files – goes here]
If your folder structure is any different, or spelled any differently, Avid won’t see it as media and won’t scan and database it.

[Shane Ross] “I haven’t had to render that effect at all…even when exporting to QT.”
How is that? Avid always does a render when you export (although I think it’s a top-layer only render, which is pretty close to an Expert Render). Are you rendering along the way so it’s already rendered, or has Avid changed something?
I might have to test this.
