Why a ProRes sequence? To render to an intraframe codec? I just loaded 4 hours of XDCam but haven’t begun cutting yet (formerly worked on all Avids).

Her hard drives are too slow, her video card is unsupported, her software is out of date, she doesn’t have enough RAM, and her processors are so old it will be a struggle for anything over SD.
Tell her to buy a refurbished z400 and upgrade to MC5.5. Throw in a couple SATA drives or pick up a G-RAID and she’ll be good to go.

I think you have to update to MC5.5, and it’s in the Media Creation–>Render Tab. As for skipping the drive confirmation – I don’t believe that’s possible.

The 1 and 2 folder are where your media goes. Avid will by default put media in the 1 folder. Whenever it hits a certain file limit, 5000 files I believe, it will make a new folder.

Exactly. You’re just inviting trouble if you install a newer version over the top of the old one.

I don’t believe Xpress ever read 2:1. It did DV50, DV25, some offline resolutions and 1:1 only. Hence your troubles.

Play with the MC 5 trial for a bit. There are so many improvements over Xpress Pro you’ll save huge amounts of time and have much, much greater capabilities. I’d push hard for the upgrade – maybe wait until MC 5.5 drops in March. It’s definitely worth it.

Download the trial of Media Composer 5. Install it on another machine, load the media and Avid project you’ve received, transcode the footage to a format your Avid can read, transfer the transcoded footage back over.
Explain to management that, for probably less than $1,000 in upgrade costs, you could just upgrade to MC5 and avoid the wasted time transcoding. Might help get you the upgrade.

In Avid, you can’t move two clips together if they’re separated by an empty space and you don’t select the empty space.
The empty space, or Filler in Avid speak, is treated pretty much as a transparent clip. So you must select all “clips”, even the filler, to move several clips.
It’s just the Avid way.

And Pan and Zoom only works with stills, no alpha channel support, and if you get too many and don’t render/mix them down as you work you’ll fill up your RAM and get error message. It’s great for quick stuff or one or two stills, but if you’re doing more than that I recommend After Effects. Infinitely more control, faster, and easier than trying to do it in Avid.
