I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge when it comes to the really technical stuff. I’m trying my best to learn though!

Ok so I received MXF files. However, when I go to relink them, it says wrong format. After some research, I discovered Media Xpress does not support 2:1, which is what I’m trying to relink.

How can I transcode them? I know one option is to upgrade to Media Composer, but I’m not sure about fitting this into our budget (I work for a training department for machinery, so our budget is dedicated to more than just video needs). However, if I can make a strong case, I may be able to convince my boss.

I work on a PC. Besides Xpress, I have Sorenson Squeeze, Pro Tools, Quicktime (regular not pro), and Adobe Production CS5 Suite, which includes Media Encoder.

Can whomever sent you the files transcode to a format that is supported?

Yes, but because they are in WI and I am in PA, it will take some time. I was just wondering if there was anything I could do now instead of waiting for mail.

Download the trial of Media Composer 5. Install it on another machine, load the media and Avid project you’ve received, transcode the footage to a format your Avid can read, transfer the transcoded footage back over.

Explain to management that, for probably less than $1,000 in upgrade costs, you could just upgrade to MC5 and avoid the wasted time transcoding. Might help get you the upgrade.

Good idea! Does it have to be a different machine? I’m guessing because the trial will fight with my current software?

I don’t find myself working with mxf files that often. In fact, this is my first time, hence why I didn’t know about Xpress not reading 2:1. This was a one-time-deal because it is b-roll footage to use for future videos. Usually I’m on my own in getting shots, and I was surprised they even gave it to me when I asked. If I do find myself in this situation often (which if they said yes once…), then I could argue about saving time.

    Thank you.

Exactly. You’re just inviting trouble if you install a newer version over the top of the old one.

I don’t believe Xpress ever read 2:1. It did DV50, DV25, some offline resolutions and 1:1 only. Hence your troubles.

Play with the MC 5 trial for a bit. There are so many improvements over Xpress Pro you’ll save huge amounts of time and have much, much greater capabilities. I’d push hard for the upgrade – maybe wait until MC 5.5 drops in March. It’s definitely worth it.
