i have a friend that’s been struggling with an xpress pro system and she’s asked for my advice to get it running. i’ve told her my opinion, but i dont think she’s buying it.

i’ll describe the system, you tell me if you think it should work. it’s a 2003 dell 340 with a pentium 4, 2.4 ghz processor, 512mb of ram and a two 80gb, 5400 rpm IDE internal drives, one for system, one for capture. she’s installed Xpress Pro 5.8.4. i think it’s an ATI rage video card.

i’m trying to tell her that the system is way underpowered. i suggested she at least buy a g raid and esata card for storage, but she wants to be sure that will make it run “like new”. whaddya think, does this sound like a viable system?

Her hard drives are too slow, her video card is unsupported, her software is out of date, she doesn’t have enough RAM, and her processors are so old it will be a struggle for anything over SD.

Tell her to buy a refurbished z400 and upgrade to MC5.5. Throw in a couple SATA drives or pick up a G-RAID and she’ll be good to go.

thanks Michael, you just did. it’s frustrating when someone asks for your help, says your the only one she can trust, and then asks you to get a second opinion when you don’t tell her what she wants to hear! i’ve been using Avid since ’94, i think i know an obsolete system when i see one.

btw, she was hoping she could install the media composer upgrade she has for it! i think that’ll not be happening.
