Avi files have a 2GB limit coming out of Avid. I think it’s a windows limitation. If you have a third party compression program like Sorenson you can export a quicktime reference and compress it to an Avi there. It has more flavors of Avi than Avid, I suppose, so it doesn’t run into the 2 GB limit.

Can’t you just open the sequence then do a Recreate Title Media? That should recreate your title just fine.

Yes, it works. We just got a Dell 690 yesterday and installed the Adobe Production Suite on it, then I grabbed our copy of Avid Xpress Pro 5.2 and installed that. Borrowed the dongle from the other Xpress Pro and it ran like a dream–as did Premiere Pro.
I would say install away.

Also, if you’re using MC, use Site Settings–it’s under the Special menu I believe. Set whatever you want up, then open the Site Settings box and drag the settings from the Settings tab of your main project bin to the Site Settings box. This will make whatever you drag there an overall setting for all projects and should keep things consistent.
Love the workspaces. They are incredible–if you aren’t really familiar with them be sure to watch the recent Media Composer webcast at Avid. They show you some neat stuff you can do with them.

Yes, he means the console within Avid (Ctrl+6 on a PC). I’ve heard horror stories about people trying to create networked media for an Avid–if a person makes one change in their system that changes anything in the media folder (like rending something as simple as a dissolve), the other station will stop working and start rebuilding the database. It has crippled systems with the constant refreshing of the databases. Your mileage may vary, and if you get it work successfully I hope you’ll post your solution here, the results you’ve achieved, and how it’s set up. There are many who would be interested to know, including me.

I’ve heard some people say it works without problems, and I’ve heard some people had trouble with them. One thing for sure–don’t have them both open at the same time.
You could always partition your drive and create a dual boot–make one for Avid only and one for Premiere. You could still access After Effects, Illustrator, etc…from the Avid side. Just make a shortcut to the AfterEffects.exe file and put it on the Avid boot desktop. This way you won’t run the risk of one editing system overwriting something important to the other editor when it’s installed.
Or, ghost your hard drive, install Premiere, try it. If it doesn’t work restore your hard drive from the backup you made.

This is a bug that goes away on some releases and comes back. Very annoying. If I remember right it’s been fixed in release 2.5.x and 2.6.x, but not in 2.2.7.
One thing to try: you might be able to save your workspace or toolset as a Site Setting (it’s under the Special Menu, I think). Just open Site Settings, set your workspace/toolset the way you want, save it, then drag that setting to the Site Settings box. This should save it for good.

Glad to hear it worked. I use MediaSift all the time–it’s been a lifesaver, and is very easy to use. One of these days I’ll check out MDV–it’s supposed to be more powerful.

You don’t say what version of Avid you’re using, but I know that with Media Composer 2.2.x and Xpress 2.2.x there is a seperate install on the Avid Install CD–it’s called Avid EMP. Install it, then go to After Effects and under preferences you’ll see EMP. This will allow you to use your Mojo as a router to your client monitor. We have it running on both of our systems here.
One caveat–I wouldn’t suggest running After Effects, using EMP, with Avid open. They might fight over resources and you could end up with a nasty mess. I did it here and Avid quit playing video back–it would play on the client monitor, but not the source/record monitor on the computer. Had to restart to get it back to where it needed to be.

Yes. Google MediaSift and search this forum for MDV. Both are free media moving programs written for Avid so you’re moving only the project you want, not all the media for all projects.
Using either of the programs, copy your media to an external, copy your project files, hook up the external up to your other system and copy the media back off (if you can’t edit from the external). Copy the project file over and Done!
