Good catch–no, it won’t. It’s an SD only codec.
I second the DNxHD codec. It’s full raster and isn’t nearly as processor intensive as DVCProHD would be, so you should get good performance. If you want to stay with DVCProHD, use the DV100 codec in the Avid codecs–it’s their wrapper for DVCProHD for a PC (or Mac, if you don’t have FCP installed).

This must have been what I was thinking about. I know you have to unlink to modify something! Makes sense that the media won’t relink, though, if you unlink and change the tape. It’s one of the things Avid looks at when relinking.

Actually, media is backwards compatible if it fulfills certain requirements.
1) If you’re going to a Meridien system, OMF media only. MXF didn’t exist in the meridien days and it won’t work. If you have P2 footage, you have MXF footage and your Meridien won’t read it.
2) The resolution has to be an available resolution on the meridien system. Just like you can’t take 2:1 footage from a Media Composer to an Xpress Pro system, you can’t take a resolution that isn’t available on the Meridien and expect it to play. I have no idea if Meridien systems had “m” resolution, but if they don’t you’ll need to transcode to something else. If if your “m” resolution media is MXF, you need to figure out how to get it to OMF (if it possible to transcode from MXF to OMF? I honestly don’t know).
3) The capture codec has to be available on the Meridien system. For example, if you don’t have the DV option and you have DV footage, you can’t transfer the footage without transcoding to something else.
Otherwise, you can take OMF footage from Symphony and roll it back to an ancient Meridien if the resolutions and codecs are available on it.

Open your effect editor for your Matte keys (titles or imported movies with alpha). In the lower right hand corner of the effect editor you’ll see a box that says 3D. Hit that to promote the effect to 3D and you’ll have the same parameters to control as the PIP effect. No reason to nest anymore, and the titles/animations will scale independently of the background.

Yeah, the display on your computer monitors is only half rez when you’re stopped–it shows 1 field only. When you hit play you should see the image improve because it’s playing both fields, but even then it won’t look as good as it should on a TV because your computer monitor is progressive, and it’s trying to play interlaced material.
Plus, graphics have a tendency to look crunchy on Avid’s display, but great when output to an actual monitor. Go figure.
Either way, glad it’s working, and never trust what’s on your computer display. Always check all your work on a broadcast monitor.

Yes. In your capture settings make sure Capture Across Timecode Breaks is checked. Whenever Avid hits a timecode break, it will stop capturing the clip, preroll, and start capturing again at the break. If you have 15 breaks, you should have 16 clips when the tape is done (you’ll always have 1 more clip than breaks).

Glad it’s working for you!
I agree that Premiere is more intuitive, but as you get more comfortable with Avid and start learing just how deep and powerful of a program it is, I think you’ll start to enjoy it more.
And I also agree that the tutorials they provide aren’t the best. I was taught to use Avid by another editor, which helped immensely.

Install the Avid codecs on your FCP system and export to the Avid DV100 codec. It’s their wrapper for the DVCProHD codec.

Before you enter Capture mode, go to your toolset menu and choose Source/Record. Your source and record monitors should be locked together. When you open your Capture tool your video should show up in the Record monitor.
Otherwise, look in your Capture settings or Video Display settings and make sure Confidence View is enabled. It hidden in one of the setting–I”m not in front of a system right now so I can’t check exactly which one.

PS. Make sure you have your Video Track enabled on your Capture tool, too.
