  • What is best codec?

Posted by Josh D. on April 24, 2008 at 3:44 am

I am exporting from FCP DVCPRO HD 1080i60 and want to know what is the best quality Avid codec. I would love to be lossless and stay in DVCPRO HD 1080i60 but the Avid running on a PC will not read those files. I have to import video files into the Avid for color correction since that is the only software my colorist knows.

    Should I use:

    DNxHD 8 or 10bit
    Animation
    Photo-JPEG

What will give me the best quality?

    Please Help!

meridien uncompressed is always a weener.
It’s lossless and seems to be generic from avid to avid.

Great thank you. I will try it with the Meridien Uncompressed codec. Do you think this will be better quality than the Animation codec at ‘best’ quality?

yes. While it’s really close to the same (and the animation codec is indeed generic) you will not have “fast import” with the animation codec. This could be a factor if importing bigass files with a fussy fella behind ya.

Will Meridian Uncompressed work with HD?

I’ve tended to use DNxHD in that sort of scenario, seems good generally.

DVCPRO HD is actually a pretty lossy format, so not ideal for finishing or grading really, moving to a lower compression finishing codec (which I consider DNxHD to be) is generally an improvement.

Going DVCPRO HD -> QT Animation/Uncompress -> DNxHD is just going to be more time consuming and risks gamma shifts going to and from the Animation/Uncompressed

[Dylan Reeve] “Will Meridian Uncompressed work with HD?”

Good catch–no, it won’t. It’s an SD only codec.

I second the DNxHD codec. It’s full raster and isn’t nearly as processor intensive as DVCProHD would be, so you should get good performance. If you want to stay with DVCProHD, use the DV100 codec in the Avid codecs–it’s their wrapper for DVCProHD for a PC (or Mac, if you don’t have FCP installed).

    Michael.
