I have read previous posts here that talk about software that can take text, timecodes and generate an XML file which can then be opened in FCP and the subtitles can be copy/pasted over your original video.

What is your final delivery? If it is broadcast then you will be delivering 29.97 interlaced.
So converting down to 23.98 and back up to 29.97 doesn’t make sense. I know the world is progressive mad but you still need to deliver standard def as interlaced to broadcasters. If you have interlace problems on a few shots, sort them out. By converting to 24p you will be introducing a whole lot of different motion artefacts and needs pre production planning to sort out shutter speeds.

Making a countdown is a good way to learn some of the functions in Motion. Don’t bother copying others. Just be creative.

If I understand you, this is a video file to play as part of the opening menu on an SD DVD
I may be wrong, but DVD menus are converted to SD mpeg2 by DVD Studio Pro. So I would export it via compressor to a high qual SD mpeg2 to minimise transcoding.

Beta is interlaced. You may have an error in field order, but you need to monitor on an external interlaced screen to accurately tell what is going on. The browser is not a good way to judge issues like field errors.
Field order issues are very common and a quick search of the forum will show that this has been well covered.

HDV cameras can play mini DV tapes if they are set up to do so. Check the manual on how to set the camera for DV playback.

I also had this issue with the HDW 2000 until I figured out that the reference needed to be set to input. I currently use the HDW 1800 and set it the same.

Outline just puts a black (or color) border around the text. It makes subtitles easier to read particularly against bright backgrounds. It isn’t sharper but it does help to differentiate text so it might appear to stand out better.

A spectrum analyser will show you what is there but only with your ears can you tell what is noise and what is good signal, unless you have a very obvious bump like a hum or whistle.
A lot of the skill in reducing background noise elements is editing out noise and applying fill if it is a noise like background kids voices. Also selecting and cross mixing between the two mics will reduce background by just focusing on the correct channel. For these reasons, I would not blanket noise reduce the whole clip, but treat each on its merits.
Also just in case you do need to export an OMF for external audio work, your original clips should remain unprocessed.

This sounds like a recurring issue. There were posts not so long ago reporting this. My suggestion at the time was to export the smoothcam shots as quicktimes (in the same codec) and overlay them in the timeline. I don’t recall any feedback so perhaps a search might find the original thread and it may contain the confirmed solution.
Do us a favour and report back if you fix it and how. It means the next searcher will find a solution.
