exported movie juddering with smoothcam filter
Hi All,
I’ve filmed a walkthrough of a house for someone using the Sony A1 shooting 1080i50 HDV on a glidecam. I then used the smoothcam filter to make it as steady as possible which has worked really well. However, when I export it out as an H.264 720p movie it has a strange juddering effect on any pans which is extremely off putting. You can see the movie here (https://www.vimeo.com/5181061). I realise this is a Vimeo flash encoding but it is a very accurate representation of the problem in the Quicktime movie. The same effect appears when exporting out a default 1080i HDV and even an animation codec version, yet it doesn’t appear on the Canvas playback which is smooth as silk. The final output of this will be web based probably as a flash movie but QT would do. Any ideas would be really appreciated!

The footage looks really good. Try using the Stabilize Behavior in Motion, you may get a better result… just make sure your export settings are set to Render Best/Full Res or that your FCP sequence settings (if you roundtrip) are set to Video Processing/Render Quality = Best.

This sounds like a recurring issue. There were posts not so long ago reporting this. My suggestion at the time was to export the smoothcam shots as quicktimes (in the same codec) and overlay them in the timeline. I don’t recall any feedback so perhaps a search might find the original thread and it may contain the confirmed solution.
Do us a favour and report back if you fix it and how. It means the next searcher will find a solution.
