What were the pixel dimensions and frame rate of the original ProRes files? If they were 720p30 then that is the right setting, but I would recommend DVCPro100HD codec over HDV. Uses four times the drive space but is closer to ProRes.
Frankly my recommendation would be to upgrade your FCP to version 6 at least. That way you can run ProRes. If you have an intel machine and at least Leopard, you could go to vers 7. The time it will take to transcode your footage surely is worth something and an upgrade is not huge money.

I go straight from the FCP timeline using export to Compressor and select a preset like 90 minutes SD DVD. This converts from the HDV timeline straight to the SD mpeg2 file for DVD Studio Pro.
Using the QT conversion to ProRes simply transcodes the footage and it still needs to be downconverted to SD mepg2 for the DVD, so you gain nothing by this extra step. In fact you lose both time and quality, although you are unlikely to notice the quality difference as ProRes is good.
Yes, you should stay interlaced and no, it has nothing to do with 50i if you are making a PAL DVD. Remember all 25 frame codecs are upper field except for DV codec which you should avoid like the plauge.

You will need to convert the footage into an editing codec so use Compressor to do that (ProRes is recommended) and at the same time, use the frame controls to change the play speed to the frame rate you want.
This should give you a slo mo of the shot and set the correct frame rate.

Correct one clip in the timeline. Copy that clip. Select all the shots from that camera in the timeline. Paste attributes> filters.
Done.

ProRes came with version 6. Your old version 5 will not have the codecs so I don’t think you can edit ProRes in vers 5 as they come with FCP 6 and as far as I know, can’t be installed for vers 5.

You can setup a standard setting in Compressor. It has numerous presets so it would be a matter of adjusting one of them to match your needs and saving that as a custom setting. A suitable name for the preset like “This one knuckle head” might help.
In FCP you then mark an In and Out point, export to Compressor, select the preset and then you are ready to submit. There is still room for operator error, so a laminated instruction sheet nailed to the wall might help as well.
Matrox make an accelerator card for H264 encoding which might be useful to cut down long file render times. H264 is otherwise slow but nice results.

The file limitation is 2 gig and I am sure it seemed perfectly logical to the Microsoft developers who speced it last century.

If your footage in FCP is interlaced, find a spot with little or no motion in it.”Or deinterlace in photoshop afterwards. You can also drop a deinterlace filter on the shot while you take the stills off and then delete it afterwards.
