Sorry to hijack, but I am looking at the same interface and was wondering what the downconvert & cross convert looked like. I am tossing up with the Kona but the Max option tips the Matrox if the downconvert is good.

You might be able to read the raw quicktime files but you won’t be able to open any project sequences. Also version 5 was early days for HDV so even that may be a problem.
There were some fundamental changes to quicktime a while back to include multi track audio. If your quicktime version is pre that change, then you will not be able to access the audio tracks properly.
5.0.4 is an old version. Any reason not to upgrade?

Are you sure it isn’t 1440 x 1080?
Also are you using export quicktime movie, export to Compressor, export quicktime conversion?
If so what are your settings and are you looking at the file in quicktime or imported back into FCP. What does quicktime tell you the codec of the exported file is. Do you have the option set to view high quality in quicktime?

I doubt that Sony would be so stupid as to embed that into the video. If they have you can’t get rid of it. I’ll bet it is only on the composite monitoring, not in the firewire data.

FCP can get confused with fonts that have multiple options within the one font set.
Use the Boris title tools which give a lot more control and reads all the font options properly. As a quick and dirty fix, in font book you could delete the thicker version of the font and then export your qt file. Reinstall the full font set later.

Did you grade the XDCam footage? If you are clipping peak whites over 100% by making an mpeg, changing color space won’t help.

I would be exporting a QT movie from FCP, straight over the network to the PC. Dropping the file into PPro and doing the rest there whilst getting back to a freed up FCP to continue work.

FCP is a quicktime based editor. It can import avi files but it is better to convert them to quicktime files first.
Not sure what you are describing with the timeline canvas? Have you tried the manual?

Who knows how OS people work out the numbering. The common protocol has been that fundamental changes jump whole numbers. Going from OS9 to OS10 was totally a new OS as they went to Unix. Leopard and Snow Leopard are a continuation of that, with Snow leopard dropping support for non intel chip computers and adding 64 bit support.
Then of course there are the marketing people who come up with jazzy names like Tiger and Snow Leopard.
Regarding your problem, there were some fairly recent threads warning of a lack of Snow Leopard support for a particular chip on many esata boards and that there was a lack of drivers.
