Does the sequence settings match the codec? Is everything rendered? Does your easy setup match the sequence settings?

Difference between 8 & 10 bit is grey scale resolution, with 10 bit having much more.

I always prefer 10 bit timelines so try Russell’s advice and use ProRes which is 10 bit but smaller than 8 bit Uncompressed.

Brad, split the clip in the middle of where you want it to fade the effect out, remove the strobe on the second half and add a dissolve between the two clips. That way the strobe version cross fades to the non strobe version of the title. Adjust the length of the dissolve to suit.

    Voila.

If you have a Kona card, then use it to downconvert to tape straight from the original timeline. It is better and real time.

DV codec is a poor choice for text and even worse for something blown up to cinema screen size.

Try firstly as Russell suggested to make sure the text is not lined up on sub pixel numbers ( x & y values with decimals)

Secondly try copy>paste the final sequence in either an uncompressed or ProRes final sequence and then render. The text will look a lot sharper that way. Not sure what codec your camera original footage is but I am guess Dv otherwise there would not be a reason to choose that as your sequence setup. If it is anything else, let us know and we might be able to make further improvements for you.

  • Thanks Rudah. So many people never get back and say if things are fixed so I appreciate it.

Also you will not have any shot handles after the grade plus you may have fun grading across any dissolve transitions or fades to black (if you have any).

Just bake in the odd shot that has a speed change. I presume you are on an earlier version of Color than 1.5.1 if you are being so cautious although it pays to simplify and flatten the timeline anyway.

  • Check your easy setup to make sure they match the codec settings. Also check the sequence settings to make sure they match the codec settings exactly.

My guess is the 1440 footage was HDV and therefore interlaced. On a computer screen you are not seeing the fact that the interlaced footage is swapping field order going to SD.

This is just a guess based on a paucity of information. So if you can tell us what codecs co-respond to the problem shots and what the OK shot are. Check in FCP if the footage in interlaced and what field order it is. Plus you need to tell us how you are down converting to SD.

Smoothcam tries to analyse the whole clip so if it is a huge file, it will take forever.

In FCP vers 7 it is supposed to have fixed that but even so, try making a quicktime of just the material you want to apply smoothcam to and put that in your timeline above the original and apply smoothcam to the new short clip.
