The issue of trying to use a non edit codec like H264 in FCP has been covered here so many times.

Do a search for Canon 5D and the correct workflow will be revealed.

You already have Color so why not try it. Make a short sequence and try the round trip.

Color is a serious step up from the 3 way CC. It is powerful therefore there is a learning curve. If you are familiar with other grading systems it is not difficult. If you intend to go this way, FCS3 with Color 1.5 is a big improvement in stable round tripping with FCP but do your homework before upgrading to FCS3.

I haven’t used Magic Bullet so can’t comment on a comparison.

[Tony Sarafoski] “do I set my timeline sequence settings to:

FRAME RATE: CSSIR 601 PAL Sq. (4:3)
    PIXCEL ASPECT RATIO: Square”

No you need to leave the sequence anamorphic to match the footage. Otherwise everything will be stretched.

To make the final file, you can use either quicktime conversion or Compressor. Most people here recommend Compressor. Either way, both offer the capability of making your final file in a square pixel 16:9 ratio (ie 1024 x 576 or multiples thereof).

[hunter stuart] “the kind from old movies, when there’s titles or chyrons on the screen — before sound”

    There were Chyrons before sound!!

Have you looked in Motion for old borders? I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some there but frankly I haven’t needed to look. There are some old style graphics & templates in DVDSP which are just tifs or jpegs. Find where they are on the drive and try importing into FCP.

No doubt you have already searched the web

If the material is all 1920 x 1080 then use that as the timeline as it is square pixel 16:9. Don’t use anamorphic SD timelines with HD material.

Copy >paste the timeline into a new sequence with the easy setup for ProRes 422, 1920 x 1080 29.97.

H264 is the best bang for meg in my opinion and also fairly universal nowdays.

Play with settings in Compressor to get the best result. Double pass encoding helps.

I can see a few things. Firstly you have PAL pixels but your frame rate is set to 29.97?? It should be 25fps for PAL codecs.

Secondly quicktime isn’t displaying 16:9 correctly with anamorphic flagged files. That is a quicktime setting. However, if this is intended for the web, you final file should be made with square pixel settings not anamorphic. The final file should be 1024 x 576. This will correctly display on all media players as 16:9 regardless of how people have setup their quicktime or other players.

Like I said, some people are used to seeing VU and making judgments about loudness, but it is not an accurate way to do that.

I have mixed over 800 docos without a VU meter and I can judge loudness using a peak meter that also lets me view phons which is an accurate measure of apparent loudness.

I also demonstrated years ago to a broadcaster QC department how I could make signal levels that were illegal appear legal on a VU and also legal levels that pinned the VU to red. After that they agreed to never tech reject a program based on VU metering and they changed their QC setup to use proper peak & phons metering.

Make sure you are connecting to analog inputs on the Decklink. They also have XLR connectors for the digital inputs.
