  • Unsatisfactory results when Downcovertiing HD to SD

    Hello friendly helpers,

I am dropping DVCProHD720p60 footage into an Apple Pro Res 422 NTSC timeline. The down-coversion on the HD footage just doesn’t look good….I have tried going through compressor…same results..The only way i can get results that are broadcast worthy is by putting the HD clip in After Effects and scaling it down in a 4X3 NTSC comp…am i missing something???

Thanks, and if this has already been discussed if you wouldn’t mind pointing to the correct thread.’

BTW i am using FCP 7.0.1

Why are you down converting? Is this for a file based delivery, or tape? If tape, capture card down converts are very good. Just using FCP to do it isn’t all that great. But I haven’t had an issue with Compressor myself.

Still, what is your workflow need for this and maybe we can suggest a better way. But it sounds like you have AE and it works, so stick with that?

change the resize filter setting to highest quality in compressor that
will help. Though it is 720P so you might see some slight jaggies on
any angles. the only way to make it nicer is to use downconversion through
a capture card as Shane suggests.

The final output is to tape and is SD….the majority of the broadcast is natively SD only some portions are natively HD and thus the need for downconversion.

The AE thing works…its just a extra step that i don’t want to take if it don’t have to.

    Thanks for your input!

If you have a Kona card, then use it to downconvert to tape straight from the original timeline. It is better and real time.
