The various plugins from Voxengo are my favourites for dynamics like the Elephant Limiter, Voxformer vocal channel processor and the Polysquasher mastering compressor. I have relied on these to deliver great sounding mixes for many years. I also use iZotope for noise reduction and other rescue jobs. They are having a 25% reduction sale till the end of the year

I would do it with keyframes but there is another way. If you place an adjustment layer above the clip you can apply a grade to the adjustment layer and then fade that layer out or in over the shot.

There are times when that simple approach will work. For complexity, keyframes are your friend. I would not use that method for power windows but it might be a way to add a complex grade overlay to a graded sequence. I’ve used to it slowly transition a scene to a high contrast black & white.

December 18, 2020 at 12:01 am in reply to: Using more than1 Timeline..

It is very rare that I don’t have a project with multiple timelines. I would ask how it might be possible to manage most work flows with a single timeline. Apart from the most simple of jobs I have never managed that.

Here’s a typical job workflow from my perspective as a colorist finisher of an edit. Import XML/ AAF. Check timeline to match all shots. Duplicate timeline so I can always reference back to the ungraded editor original. Grade pass in new timeline. Once grade is locked then work on titles & supers. This may be another duplicate of the grade timeline so I have a text and textless version. Edit the deliverables which may be up to nine or ten edit variations of the program as dictated by the broadcasters world wide. Each one is a new timeline so that all is contained in the one project. So at the end I may have 12 or more timelines depending on how many variations for delivery are required. This is typical for a simple documentary.

If I then had to create various language subtitles then the number of timelines will increase. Swapping between projects with single timelines would drive me crazy. It is so much better to have everything in a single project with multiple timelines so when all is ready, I can create a nice big render cue in that project and let the computer go overnight creating all the variations of the program.

You can always just copy the text layers from timeline one to timeline two. What is the advantage of compounding the text layer either as a single clip or timeline? I do wish there was a simple way to adjust alpha on a compound clip but I’m not sure I see the reason on a timeline.

Yes no progress bar when doing a project export or database backup. Big projects do take a while but in my experience they backup. When you can close the database window it means it has done it. Also check the destination to see if the file is there.

November 26, 2020 at 10:52 pm in reply to: How to convert a timeline that is 50 fps to 25 fps?

I had this recently and solved it. Trying to remember the process but I think I created a new Project, set to 25 and then using dynamic project switching I opened the original, copied the timeline and pasted it into the new project. Then I copied the clips in the 50fps timeline and copied into a 25 project.

Linus Torvalds is keen to see Linux run on these chips. I feel sorry for anyone having to buy Intel Macs. Even my latest PC rebuild is AMD Ryzen but I’m anticipating ARM will be the next upgrade cycle, maybe even a Mac!

The video is worth watching to see just how good the performance is with such an entry level machine. I don’t know how many machines in the Mac Intel range this machine outperforms but it is clearly indicating M1 chips are showing enormous promise with performance and power saving. It is also significant in that it shows companies like BM are already making ARM software versions and they are seriously working. As Affinity is also ARM ready, I only need iZotope to make their software ARM ready and there are reasons to reconsider Apple computers as competitive again for me.

I’m not afraid of Linux as I’ve run Mint on my office laptop for over a decade. However, there is a lot of ancillary software that I run that is not available in Linux versions. I cannot live without iZotope. It’s Mac or Win. Affinity is my Photoshop replacement. Mac or Win. I wish the ancillary software I must use was Linux as well. Until then I will build my own boxes and run Windows, although I am intruiged at the new M1 chip Macs and the reports of how well they run Resolve 17.1
