Apparently the M1 optimised version of Resolve 17.1 on a Mac mini blows away the Intel version

Even Apple wary old me might consider an ARM MacPro down the track. I wonder how long it will take Win to go this way. I’m also glad I am doing my current PC rebuild with a Ryzen 24 core threadripper.

No strong opinion on question 1 other than possible confusion with the old Final Cut Pro Legacy forum which is clearly labelled legacy but might trip some up.

Blackmagic in a normal year would have gone to NAB with Ursa Mini 12k and Resolve 17. It would have really been beta and by now they would have stacked on lots of point upgrades so it would be much the same only less actual beta sorry stories. BM obviously care more about Apple than vice versa and they knew all about the ARM processors as they already have a version of 17 for them. I think BM are on their own trajectory of announcing hardware and software these days. They might have wondered if FCP10.5 was going to be a significant release so sought to steal some thunder by going earlier but frankly they probably felt it was more important to get this version out in 2020 before it gets lost in Black Friday and Christmas.

Increasingly I feel BM are just going to play their own game and probably feel far less pressure to dance around Apple, Adobe or Avid.

November 16, 2020 at 10:35 pm in reply to: Audio Track Craziness

Is there audio on all ten tracks for each scene? If not, using clip attributes I would turn off all unused tracks. As a former and still occasional sound recordist, I only enable track record in the field when there is active content. It is just lazy to be throwing blank tracks into post. As I mostly do post, I suggest you talk to the recordist about good practice. If you don’t feedback they keep making assumptions.

I would use mono tracks in the timeline to bring each take in. That way I could solo selected tracks which mutes the rest. I would not stack takes but line them up one after the other in a timeline to review them so the track count doesn’t go nuts. When editing, after keyframing or slicing up the various tracks, you might then compound to tidy up each clip. Before sending to picture & sound post you will need to decompose those clips but so much easier to handle as a compound with all those tracks.

Another thing is to link audio & video so you can just select a clip and hit d which disables picture and all sound if you have stacked takes

November 16, 2020 at 12:08 am in reply to: Will new versions of Resolve work on Intel-based Macs?

I’m about to rebuild my PC. I opted for a Ryzen 24 core threadripper CPU and I already had a NVIDIA 2080ti GPU. For MOBOs I have had a good run with ASUS but chose a Gigabyte MOBO this time as it seemed to offer the features I wanted with the Ryzen socket. I always use 32 gig of RAM minimum and an onboard RAID. I re-use my rack mount boxes and power supplies as power demand has dropped over the past decade from MOBO and GPU and years ago I bought overspecced power supplies which I still use.

In simple terms I find going above minimum spec for all components gives me a much better investment as I value my time and the frustration of waiting on half baked hardware to deliver is just counter productive. So my advice is to always buy more grunt than you think you currently need.

Any advice I would have for professional friends would be based entirely on their financial situation, usage requirements, current equipment and what they prefer in terms of OS and hardware. If Windows also makes a decision to develop for ARM based chips, I would assess that entirely based on its merits which would of course include company history, price, transition plans, present hardware life cycle and OS. At the heart of everything however is software. That has almost always determined my choices of hardware and OS.

For all the projected hope that 10.5 might be a major upgrade, it seems totally underwhelming. Now dropping the X, are they thinking we no longer maintain the rage against the previous dearly departed Final Cut Pro? I know I’ve moved on completely but exchanging X for Pro seems more like the kiss of death.

5 times what exactly. However the very fact that Resolve has already a version for the M1 chips that looks like it will seriously outperform Intel chips sort of vindicates my recent concerns about people buying Intel Mac laptops right now. I can report my friend cancelled her MacBook Intel order and is now deciding on when to jump with the ARM versions.

I though DNx playback support was already in X. Was this a bug fix?

Blackmagic have very cheap capture cards and their Desktop utility includes capture software which is free.
