My friend is weighing up many options but for the time being has postponed any purchase. Her existing laptop needs a bit of management to get some performance and weirdness issues sorted. A killer argument for her is battery. Being a location stills photographer, having a days worth of battery power when on location matters. The M1 laptops are talking 18 hours. Over time that will drop but being able to run for a full days shooting without access to power is great.

I went through it but by getting into an Intel MacPro I was better off. My friend is about to go Intel on a Mac laptop. I’m worried she will end up stranded on an old OS and old software before she gets the expected life out of her laptop which will then have zero resale value. I’m recommending she wait for the ARM laptops and get a machine that will last longer, have better performance and decent battery life. She can’t afford an expensive mistake and won’t go PC where she would get better value and not suffer the transition which I doubt will be trouble free.

I would think Apple will go through an interesting time with the change over to ARM. Blackmagic will not want to have to develop multi versions of Resolve for both Mac platforms once Apple drop support for Intel Macs. You won’t get eight years unless you freeze OS and NLE software when that happens. I reckon you will get 4 years.
Alternatively you can get a PC which outperforms the iMac and upgrade or replace it every four years. Resolve on Windows is not going anywhere and you can have an up to date machine every four years for less than churning Macs. I think it is a great time to avoid Mac for a couple of years while they do a transition which will always compromise Intel versions.

I have a friend who was saying she was about to buy a new Mac laptop. I did say she should wait for the new arm processor versions as buying an Intel mac now seems like a bad idea. The performance will not match and the clock is ticking on how long it will be able to stay up to date with OS & software. Tricky times for Mac owners

Grant’s an old tape op editor so no surprises with the design of edit keyboards and the ‘source tape’ modes on the Cut page.
I hadn’t picked up on font preview. That’s a great one and audio in Fusion is excellent. They have really improved a lot of FX preview options like transitions and other FX. They make a big difference to me in my workflows.
Timeline export is also fantastic and includes much better media management including proxy options. Being able to backup timelines rather than whole projects will save a lot of time and space for me when I have a feature doco with 9 versions, each in their own timeline.

Some significant improvements in the grading and Fairlight pages which please me greatly. I can finally transition from my stand alone Fairlight as the new desktop mixer controller looks very good and the improvements in audio edit and automation make it viable.
One new tool in Color that caught my eye is the obvious copy of the color warp tools from Nobe’s tools. Same grid patterning to push hue & sat and hue & luma. I’ve been using the Nobe plugin for a while so having this built in is not a big one for me but the fact that I can undock the display and move it around it very helpful. This is also true of the other curves displays too. Not having to find it and add it as an OFX plug is also a plus.
I really must embrace the Cut page. I don’t do much editing but so much is going into the cut page so I will jump in. The controller is interesting. So cheap I will probably get one as it also will help on the edit page. I assume the Fairlight controller will also give me the transport/ jog controls on all pages, but having the extra edit controls, particularly the paste commands on dedicated keys will save me from finding function keys on a Querty.
And the smart masks on the colour page look like a big winner, along with the improved object removal and pixel fixers. Will I still need my Boris CC for wire removal or will the Object Removal now do that job too? I’m just at the point of doing a rebuild with new MOBO and GPU so I will have to wait to do that before installing so I’m keen to hear feedback from early adopters.

I’m a bit perplexed. A 13 year old codec is the only thing to catch the eye of the Emmys engineering panel? Has the DNx family of codecs already got their Emmy? I don’t see anything that makes ProRes remarkable, especially as the quicktime wrapper is EOL.

Color correction is GPU. CPU tends to get a work out with VST audio effects and decoding camera codecs like H264, 265. So the difference would be the codecs.
