The Decklink HD Pro has both SDI and component output which I use to input my Sharp 45″ Aquous HD monitor. Works a treat for both HD and SD. I would use this instead of the Decklink HD and a component converter.

Having played with audio time expand/compress software, I can tell you that there ia a lot of crap software is out there that mangles, particulalrly on time expand. I haven’t heard the Soundtrack Pro version so I am keen to hear any feedback from users.

I use the MPEX2 algorithms built into Pyramix. They are fabulous and capable of expand or compress on 5.1 mixes, keeping all tracks in phase. This is serious grunt rendering and takes longer than play speed to process, even on a hefty PC.

May 25, 2005 at 10:55 pm in reply to: Favorite mouse for input

I use a combination of the Shuttle Pro2 and a Microsoft five button mouse. I have played with different combinations of mouse buttons and the Shuttle Pro assignements. Depends on what you are doing most at the time, but I am inclined to change the mouse around but leave the main dedicated edit keys, Mark In/ Out etc on the Shuttle Pro unchanged. The Shuttle Pro can also be toggled to different settings when doing other tasks like Capture. I have also mapped it to work with Motion, particularly the jog wheel.

I come from a background of using decicated controllers so I have a loathing for keyboards which are not ergonomic. I watch other editors struggle with the multi button mouse and ignore the Shuttle Pro entirely. Horse for courses.

Dylan , if you want to compare two EDLs and generate a change EDL (ie EDL two is new cut but what is common to previous cut) then there is an online service that lets you upload the two EDLs and it generates a change EDL with master reels.

April 29, 2005 at 8:37 am in reply to: Exporting OMF’s for ProTools…levels?

As an audio studio (that doesn’t use Protools), I have the option to import an OMFI with or without clip levels. I have never imported an OMFI with clip levels as set in the picture edit.

I know editors can go to a lot of trouble but clip levels are not that important when it comes to sound post. Dynamic level changes and EQ may translate from system to system but frankly, I haven’t the time to undo the relatively clumsy mix attempts that I hear from picture edit suites. No offence but they are ususally a mess with fx, dialog and music clips all mixed up.

So rather than buy software that might make it possible, ask your sound post people if they want this or can even read an XML or Automatic Duck file.

April 29, 2005 at 8:29 am in reply to: Audio Mixer for FCP

Yamaha have a range of mixers from 24 channel to 96 inputs with all manner of analog and digital inputs. I use an old O2R with FCP bringing the output of the Balckmagic card and the mac optical out into the AES inputs.

Yamaha mixers can control external midi devices. They also have transport keys as well as mix faders/ pots. Software is available for free from Yamaha that lets you save unlimited setups, patching and routing option via USB from Mac or PC. If nothing else, they are the cheapest but most powerful digital multi routers available. 5.1 mixing and monitoring is built in.

April 29, 2005 at 8:23 am in reply to: import bwf files

FCP will import a bwf file as if it were a standard wav file, without reading the embeded timecode. Make sure the bwf’s are not some fancy sample rate like 88.2 or 96k.

Sebsky will convert the embeded timecode if this is required. If not, then just import the file like any wav or aif.

Both Apple and AVID are making bold claims about being first for this and doing everything in one box. Relax. It is just the hype of NAB. We all know that no-one actually tries to do absolutely everthing in one box (well no sane person), so don’t be surprised that you still have to use other machines, other software and other people.

    David,

Pyramix has fantastic EQ and very good dynamics processing. You will not come close to emulating it with FCP plugins. Also FCP is not a sophisticated audio editing tool. Editing accuracy sub frame is a minimum requirement. I know the temptation is to finish audio in FCP, but it will take longer to acheive an inferior result, compared to audio on most systems. Pyramix is particularly good and you will hear a world of difference.

I should also add that devices like the CEDAR DNS1000 will actively noise reduce car ambience even better. Combined with EQ, large amounts of rumble can be removed, without making the voices sound thin and reedy, which be the result ofexcessive EQ.

CEDAR is available as a stand alone or plug in for audio posts systems like SADIE and Protools. It isn’t cheap, just the best.
