Favorite mouse for input
Posted by Justin Ferar on May 25, 2005 at 3:08 pmI just switched over from editing Media 100 on OS9 where I used the logitech mouseman optical.
The software was fine because you could program the mouse differetly for each application.
On OSX the logitech control center software is a crime! Everytime you restart the mouse is on crack and you must adjust in system preferences.
Not only that but you can no longer program buttons differently for each application. Someone desereves a backhanded slap for this.
So what are you all using? I prefer to have three buttons (left, right, and thumb) plus wheel button.
Kensington? Mac Ally? Is there a better logitech solution?

May 25, 2005 at 3:23 pmI can’t help you with the mouse, I’m happy with my plain old non-programable logitech mouse.
But if you’re that into custimization, you should think about something like this:

It comes with software that lets you program it for each application, just like you’re talking about. I bought mine because I thought it would help me in Final Cut, but much to my surprise, I started programing it to make new tabs and switch between them in Safari, control iTunes, and even make new folder in Finder.
Maybe that’s more than you want, but I thought I’d suggest it since I’ve enjoyed mine so much.
They make a smaller one too:

May 25, 2005 at 7:06 pmI use the intellimouse explorer from the dark empire and hate to say it but I love it.
Have set buttons 4 and 5 to lock audio and video respectively. Wheel zooms in and out on the timeline.
(Can’t live without this one) and the wheel click performs a fit to fill on any window. The only thing is M$ changed the driver to disallow mapping the wheel but I’ve held on to the old
driver which still works even in tiger.Apple Certified Final Cut Pro Trainer

May 25, 2005 at 7:34 pmThere’s also USB Overdrive, which will apply custom settings to mouse buttons and wheel, click wheel etc, globally and by application. Versions for OS9 thru OS X 10.4. Shareware at https://www.usboverdrive.com.

May 25, 2005 at 10:55 pmI use a combination of the Shuttle Pro2 and a Microsoft five button mouse. I have played with different combinations of mouse buttons and the Shuttle Pro assignements. Depends on what you are doing most at the time, but I am inclined to change the mouse around but leave the main dedicated edit keys, Mark In/ Out etc on the Shuttle Pro unchanged. The Shuttle Pro can also be toggled to different settings when doing other tasks like Capture. I have also mapped it to work with Motion, particularly the jog wheel.
I come from a background of using decicated controllers so I have a loathing for keyboards which are not ergonomic. I watch other editors struggle with the multi button mouse and ignore the Shuttle Pro entirely. Horse for courses.

May 25, 2005 at 11:53 pm[Tom Matthies] “My favorate mouse is a Wacom Grahpire tablet!”
I’ll second that. Been using a tablet going on 8 years now and I hate using a mouse. Running the Wacom Intuous 3, 9×12 model at the moment and it’s great.

May 26, 2005 at 12:23 amHi,
The Kensington Software is good, does what you want. I suggest more buttons. I have five with my Kensington Optical Elite and could easily use five more, so I have a Shuttle Pro on the way.
Best Wishes,
Mitch
