What DVD media are you using. G4s are unlikely to be able to read DVD +R disks as they have older drives. G5s can read and burn both DVD -R and DVD +R. Get a -R disk and try that. Also make sure the disk is closed session.

I have about 5 different DVD drives in my studios and from time to time one drive just won’t read a disk that other machines have no trouble with. This can be due to variations in media. Always use good qual media, even though it costs a few cents more. Your data and time are more important.

What you describe is an auto ducker. The directors com dips the rest of the audio if I understand your description. No plugin within FCP can do that. Also VST doesn’t work in FCP.

I suggest you either do your audio track with other software or you could automate a mix in FCP, dipping the audio during narration using the mix tool.

If you have FCP studio, you can check if Soundtrack Pro has and auto duck or sidechain compressor plugin.

  • Broadcasters will accept HDV, especially when they don’t know what format you shoot. A recent program I worked on was all shot on the Canon XL H1 and two broadcasters that tech checked it thought it was HDCam.

Putting everything into perspective, the cost of editing and onlining standard def 10 years ago was much higher than HD today. So not only has quality improved but costs have come down. An HDV project today is costing half as much as a digi beta SD project a decade ago.

With the price of external drives so cheap, the time taken to MM a mere 66 gig wouldn’t be worth the effort surely.

Try putting the sped up clip on another layer and keyframe opacity down from 100 to 0 to fade the layer in or out, rather than use the dissolves. The shot that you are dissolving in to, extend on a layer below and opacity ramp it in using the same frames as the top layer. Hey presto a nice dissolve between the shots.

  • Of course a capture card with HD SDI in is required. As mentioned, the AJA plus the Decklink Extreme (which is what I use).

  • Capture HDV into an uncompressed HD sequence can be done with either the Canon HDV cameras (with HD SDI out) or via a converter like the Miranda or Convergent bridge boxes.

I have used all three and they work, although my preference is the Canon as it handles camera stop starts better.

Depending on which system is used to conform the HD, it may be better to use Automatic Duck or XML to transfer the project file. Of course if you reconform on an FCP, no need for EDL there.

Mythbusters looks good cause it is PAL and post produced in Australia.

I agree with the comment that the people who make the best of any technology are the key ingredient.

I still have Shotlister running on a PC. Although written for Win 3.1 it still runs under XP.

It convets an EDL into a graphic display of columns, like an old dubbing chart which film sound people used. Duration, source info, descriptions, relative and absolute offsets can be displayed so if you can find a copy of this software out on the net somewhere it will solve this and many other future EDL problems.

It also converts EDLs to other formats ie Sony to CMX etc.
