I wanted to monitor some HDV coming firewire off a Sony Z1 camera recently. Opened Log/capture. The meters were moving but no audio out. I then found in the Audio Video settings that the AVDevice page needed to be opened and my Decklink card selected for playback output. The Easy Setup had this deselected.
I could then monitor the audio as normal whilst playing or capturing HDV and of course it was in sync.

If the dropout is just the one frame or field, then the repair plugins from CHV has a dropout fixer. Basically it lets you select a field from a previous or post frame and insert it in a defined area.
I believe Digital Heaven have a similar dropout fixer plugin too.

Some of us here on the FCP forum know more than squat about audio. I am sure many editors will put in their 2 cents about lenses, then so they should be able to offer an opinion about microphones.
Here’s the formula – buy the best mic you can afford. Rode’s are very good cheap mics. DPA, Schoeps and Sennheiser are better. Schoeps has a new lightweight shotgun. This is my recommendation but if you need cheap then Rode has the running. The Chinese are producing good cheap mics too, but mainly studio mics, not location directionals.

Have you tried eBay? There are four available on there when I just did a search.
I am looking at the HDV1500 which is a lot more $ but does HDV as well as all flavours of DV.

Glad it isn’t a feature. 20 mins at HD 10bit 444 is about 230 gigs so no problems there.
There is a widget at Digital Heaven that calculates drive space for any codec.

One other thought – were the graphics interlaced or progressive? Again if it didn’t strobe on your monitors, then that might be a furphy.
I would try to run it on some other brand of projector like a Barco or Christie before you blame anything. A friendly local cinema might be able to oblige.

I have the Decklink HD PRO with dual link. Looking at the setups in FCP I have the option of 10 bit RGB 444 at 29.97, 25, 24, 23.98, plus 2K 444 at various rates as well, so FCP has the capability in theory. That said, I have never used above HD Uncompressed 10 bit 422 which works fine. A test would be a good idea.
Hope it is a short film with low ratio if you are capturing to a 16TB SAN. That’s not a huge amount of space for rushes in 444.

Firstly I assume you rendered before playout. Secondly the D5 playback on your HD monitors looked the same as straight off FCP.
Thirdly you are talking interlaced 29.97 Or 25, not progressive 23.98.
If all of the above is true, then what is the JVC projector doing? Is it deinterlacing on the fly? What is its refresh rate?
What does it look like on a different projector? My money is on the projector, not FCP. I play out Uncompressed HD from my G5 dual 2.5 to HDCam without any of those issues (1080 50i).

Clipping distortion is not fixable. CEDAR decrackle can help a bit on intermod distortion.
Trying to redraw waveforms is fantasy.

If you are planning on exporting the audio via OMF, then check if normalising will cause the normalised clip to be exported. This is not what the audio post people want. They want the unprocessed.
A quick and non destructive way to add more gain is to add the compressor limiter plugin and there is more gain there to be added after you have done the basic +12db.
