The only way I can find that works to append to the beginning of a secondary is to move the playhead to the first frame of it and hit shift-q. then hold down g and drag the secondary to the end of the first clip.

To make matters even more confusing, I finally got a chance to mess around with 10.1 on a Mac Pro (quad core with D300). Initial reaction with FCPX and rendering is… um… wow.
Waveforms pop up almost immediately after playback. FF and RW in the timeline are spot on. Footage is on the internal drive. And yep, I’m at an Apple Store. So, footage is proxy. Still, comparing my iMac and rMPBr with proxy footage, this feels snappy.
It’s got the responsiveness I’ve been waiting for. Moving clips in the timeline is quick and… responsive (did I mention it’s responsive?). Now if I just remember where I left that spare 5 to 6 grand? 🙂

I’d be really interested in seeing the results with a 6 core with a D700 vs D500. One also might deduce from this that the 4-core could be faster on some of these tasks since the clock speed on that is the highest.

I’d say it depends on the size of the project and how much work you want to put into managing media.
If it’s an unshared, short project shot on DSLRs which includes lots of downloaded clips, images, music, etc…, I’d probably just keep it managed. For me, it would be easier and quicker to have FCP copy files into the library vs finding a place on the drive to move the media to and then move into X.
If it’s a large shared project that spans multiple drives, then I think you’re better served with external media.
Anything in the middle-ground is fair game :).

Trying to see what might be similar between your project and mine… Maybe to find the root of the issue.
Do you have a lot of cuts in your timelines? Are they multicam? How about lots of J- or L-cuts?
Are the clips 15 minutes each? Or are they broken down into smaller clips?
I know it’s been said a million times, but I trashed the prefs, fixed the permissions on the boot, and also ran disk warrior on the media drive. Unscientifically, it seemed to help a little bit.

To my knowledge you slip while keeping keyframes stationary. However, you can shift-click the first and last keyframe, which selects all the keyframes in the middle and then move them all together (which is pretty freakin’ awesome). It looks like you are on 10.0.x. You’d need to update to 10.1 to get this functionality.
