I think you’ll still need X2Pro if you are moving directly to ProTools. My understanding is that audio levels move from FCP to Protools via X2Pro. I had issues getting audio levels to move over to Logic via FCPXML.
Also, via xml, it doesn’t turn off unused audio channels that have been muted in the inspector. X2Pro will do this with regular clips (but not with multiclips).
That said, the xml transfer now works with both roles and subroles (yay). It’s a step in the right direction.

Yes that’s exactly what’s happening.
One thing I’d recommend is possibly adding the VO enhancement effect to the compound clip instead of inside the compound clip. This is assuming you are applying it globally to all clips inside the compound clip already.
Another quick workaround is to select the compound clip inside the library, go into the inspector and under Info, scroll down and select “Modify Settings.” There you can change the compound clip to stereo. This only seems to work when selecting the compound clip from the library. Looks like they can’t be modified from the project timeline.
And last, you could apply the effects inside a mono compound clip. If you have a mixer hooked up to your system, check the playback levels there.

Michael,
How many audio channels are active in your interview clips before you turned them into a compound clip? If there’s only one channel active, the compounds created would become mono. In that scenario, the VU meter levels would appear different between the compound timeline and the project. Can you hear a difference in volume between the compound and project?

Try optimizing and then re-render. I remember reading somewhere that Neat Video worked better with i-frame footage than long-gop or camera-orig h264s. The slowdown is almost certainly neat video. But keep in mind, even after transcoding, your renders could still be slow. Neat Video is great but just, ya know, just a little slow. Lock ‘n’ load shouldn’t be a slow render. I find it to be very fast even on my iMac.

You might be selecting more than just video clips in the browser (perhaps compound clips or graphics, pdfs, etc…). Select a few clips at a time and right-click to see if it’s still grayed out. If it isn’t, then my recco would be to switch to list view and group by file type. Or create a smart search and set it to view Media Type. Select audio with video, video only, or audio only.

I cut a 4K RED spot last summer on an i7 iMac. No issues back then other than slow renders since we didn’t convert to Prores. Ran on a Thunderbolt GRAID. Finished spot aired at 1080p.
I purchased a GH4 for my corporate and personal work and will continue to use it just as I have been with the GH2/3… except now everything will be “4K-ier” ;). GH4 shoots 100mbps h264 @ 4K. This work will go to the web. More than likely in HD for corporate for now.
When the work warrants it, I’ll upgrade. But for now, I’ll most likely keep my current drives and see how long I can “suffer.” I have been purchasing $100 1TB USB drives for most projects and everything has been fine as they run at 90MB/s.
I expect to get a Mac Pro in the future-future. Not sure when I’ll go with 4K monitoring. Depends on what’s announced by Apple and, being completely practical, what I can fit on my desk. My edit suite might need a re-think by that point.
Cost for initial upgrade of the camera is 1700 + 250 per SD Card that can support 4k.

I would bring it into FCP. Will give you more room to play around.
If playback or rendering is an issue, you’ll have the option to convert to Prores or Proxy. Set to better performance for playback.
You can edit at 4k for your radio cut, then bring into a 720p timeline for reframes. Prores will render much faster than the native red footage.
