it’s great news you’ve been able to bring back the super-blacks and super-whites out of quicktime clips, congrats.

On the Color forum, we were wondering why hardly any post-production app can read or write super-whites ?

Does one have to hack quicktime, or the API are enough ?

From my tests, this setting only change the monitoring, not the fact that the super-whites are clipped at input.

I too love my daVinci, and I second all the positive feedback read here. Yes the speed is amazing, yes it’s much more powerful.

But it’s not a question of “why I wouldn’t go back”, it’s a question of “why I still need Color to be sitting around”.

– DaVinci clips the super-whites of quicktime files. Only solution I found in those cases is to do a full to legal using Color

– DaVinci is still at an early stage of development, and there are lots of bugs. Yes there are lots of bugs in Color, but those are not new to me 😉

– DaVinci implementation of the wave is very poor as compared to Color. Hope this will change soon, I have the feeling to be using DaVinci LE

– DaVinci don’t have a colorFX room

– conform via EDL is more awkward than via XML

All in all, I would keep my Color for projects for which I have less than half a day. You can get real time in Color too when not using the video output, and contrarily to popular belief, you can get accurate colors on your second DVI monitor, using color profiles (more about about that in the Color forum, when I get the time).

When I get the time, I will also post a full list of bugs I found. I wish there was a DaVinci Bug Database so as to know whether or not it’s worth documenting a bug.

open the Terminal and :

* to save the database on your Desktop, with a name of davinci_currentdate.tar
/Library/PostgreSQL/8.4/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/SharedSupport/pg_dump -h localhost -U postgres resolve --blobs -f ~/Desktop/davinci_`date "+%y_%m_%d_%H_%M"`.tar --format=custom --verbose

* to restore the database from an archive (WARNING : current database will be erased)
/Library/PostgreSQL/8.4/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/SharedSupport/pg_restore -h localhost -U postgres --single-transaction --clean --dbname=resolve FULLPATH_OF_THE_ARCHIVE

use at your own risks ! the password that the terminal will ask is that of the PostgreSQL database : DaVinci

Yes I’m also very surprised/annoyed/worried so see such an important feature is missing.

So I did the test, and switchResX works beautifully to virtually disconnect the gtx285 of any monitor when running DaVinci

When preparing the files for you, I realized the problem was gone, ie there was no file without timecode in davinci that had timecode in FCP. It was probably some sort of cache or a refresh that did not take place after I chose the correct config option “use timecode embededded in the source clip”.

I was able to successfully conform the movie.

thanks for the suggestion, but indeed, less than ideal. I would do the job in Color rather than fall back to this woraround, because there are lots of cross-fades.
