  • timecode of quicktime files not fully implemented ?

Posted by Michael Cinquin on October 7, 2010 at 9:38 pm

    Hi

when I browse quicktime files in the “media storage” window, I can see the timecodes of the quicktime files are recognized.

But when I add those files to my media tool, starting timecode is suddenly “00:00:00:00”.

    am I missing something ?

Hi, can you check on the config screen – timeline confirm options if “Embedded in the source clip” is selected. This is the normal mode. Then add you clips to the media pool.

    Hi Peter

my bad, indeed it works better with “Embedded in the source clip” selected : when timecode is recognized for a shot, the timecode is still recognized when its added to the media pool.

The problem is there are dozens of quickitme files for which the timecode is not recognized at all (lets call them the “unrecognized”).

It makes impossible an edl conform. Yet the unrecognized do have timecode, that FCP displays successfully. Looking at the unrecognized in quicktime player, I noticed that they have a timecode track. All in all, I could not find any difference between the unrecognized and the other files.

If I don’t find a solution, it’s going to be problematic to conform this hour-long documentary, I’m going to have to export one file and use scene detection : not ideal for the numerous fades

Export an EDL of the timeline as well. Import the “baked” QuickTime file to Media Pool and use the EDL to Preconform. The fades will be there. Probably not ideal, but it will get the job done. 🙂

[Ola Haldor Voll] “Probably not ideal”

thanks for the suggestion, but indeed, less than ideal. I would do the job in Color rather than fall back to this woraround, because there are lots of cross-fades.

Could you please upload one of the files in the which the timecode does not work, and send us a link at davincihelp (at) blackmagic-design.com?

    Thanks,
    Rohit

    Hi

When preparing the files for you, I realized the problem was gone, ie there was no file without timecode in davinci that had timecode in FCP. It was probably some sort of cache or a refresh that did not take place after I chose the correct config option “use timecode embededded in the source clip”.

I was able to successfully conform the movie.

Sorry for the noise, and thanks for your reactions
