Hi Bob!
I actually tried to play it first in my 2800. It had TC; no picture; “hash” for audio. That’s what led me to try the J30. An odd thing, but I get a lot of odd things. Thanks for responding.Mike Brown

Bob,
First, you should review the captions for spelling and grammar. Have your captioner provide a text file or you can make your own with the CCASDI program found at the link below.
Link each timeline in your project to the specific .scc file by clicking the VIDEO track in the timeline then selecting the file in the properties window.
The only way I know to make sure the captions are playing correctly is to burn a disc and play through a monitor that can decode CC.
I’ve found these tools to be quite handy for dealing with .scc files.

I hope this is helpful.Mike Brown

Closed captioning on line 21 is not preserved during encoding. If you are authoring a DVD, you’ll need to provide the CC in .scc files.
If you are looking to caption other types of computer video, this may help.

MPEGs don’t carry timecode. They all start at 00:00:00:00. Try converting your SCC file from drop to non-drop or vice versa using SCCTools.

We use Taiyo Yuden Watershield DVD-R & CDs (not watershield)almost exclusively. I recommend Tape Online, but there are other sources.

Running Avid Media Composer Adrenaline…
1. Layoff finished master to BSP or DVCPRO.
2. Make chase tape (my captioner still wants VHS) with TC window & on ch 2.
3. Send tape & script to captioner.
4. Review CC file for errors.
5. Adjust timecode on the approved .scc file using SCCTOOLS. This is because MPEG2 elementary streams do not carry TC. MPEG files start at 00:00:00:00, so the the TC in the .scc file needs to be relative to that. I do this myself, but my captioner will do it if I ask.
6. Link the adjusted .scc file to the timeline in Encore.
7. Burn a check disc and review to make sure the captions appear when & where expected.
8. Make a master disc or DLT & send to replicator to make a zillion copies.
9. Congratulate self on a job well done!Mike Brown

Most stations and networks with whom we deal still want BSP. Some cable outfits want DVD or DVCAM.
No broadcaster has yet to ask us for HD or even 16:9. That will probably change as Feb 19 approaches.
For us, we originate on DV, DVCAM, DVCPRO, DVCPRO 50, some DVCPRO HD, a little HDCAM here and there; I can’t remember when we shot BSP. I am shooting a lot on PRO 50 lately, so I would consider that an upgrade/replacement for BSP in the field. Dig Beta remains our standard def master format; HD is still in the future for us.
This is from a corporate non-profit producer with about 2500 reels of BSP in the vault.Mike Brown

March 10, 2008 at 1:25 pm in reply to: Line 21 captioning – Is Scenarist the only programme?Encore CS3 will indeed do line 21 CC, but it is not a captioning system. We use an outside service for that, and SCCTOOLS mentioned above to manipulate the start times in the files.
The ADA does not “require” CC, but CC is one way to fulfill ADA requirements. I believe the FCC is requiring CC for certain broadcast programs, but that really isn’t related to DVD authoring.Mike Brown

I was using a QT reference for Sorenson as I’ve always done before. This last time, I made a plain old QT movie – not a reference – for Sorenson to crunch. Encore seems happy with the result so I’m moving on. May be something weird with the original media. Always blame the Avid…
