That’s what I would normally do, but in this case the filename box is blank, so for each file I need to type in a name that exactlyu matches the other clip, then add the one or whatever. Something else is happening here. There are no files in my system with similar names and it happened on two other edit systems with their own hard drives.

We didn’t digitize color bars, just chose a clip from the middle of the tape. What we see in the video is a sequence with more lag than I’d like in moving objects in the 24P sequences, so I’m wondering if we’re not missing something. It almost looks like we’re shooting with no shutter or with a shutter in the 120 to 180 degree position than one at 225 which should make things more crisp with less motion artifiacts??

I think I’d check my lighting instruments. Did anyone notice with their eye a change in light or noise from the lighting heads?

I’d check power sources and if you’re using HMI lighting I’d check the key lights to see if they are having some issues, also if the key lights were plugged into the same circuit.

I’ve seen this happen in standard definition with flakey power and HMI’s. Usually if an HMI ballast isn’t getting good power they’ll shut down, or start making noise, but not always.

In my experience with Panasonic HD cameras (I bought the first one they sold in the world, and have personally shot more than 1000 hours of HD footage with these cameras) I’ve never experienced anything like this. There was a small problem with their first 1080i camera with some light aberrations in bright exterior light if you had used the synchro scan shutter and were at a speed less than 1/60th and were shooting outside, but that problem was corrected as soon as or shortly after we pointed it out to them in ‘2000.

    Hope this helps…Mason

I’m also new to using 24P and we imported, from the camera, via HDSDI, a few minutes of material shot in 24fps/59.94, with a 225 degree shutter, using a Black Magic Decklink Hd card. I put it on a a 720P/60 timeline in FCP 5 and it played just like other material we have shot in 60 fps. We also placed a couple of scenes shot in 60 (59,94) fps and they looked fine too. Of course there was a difference, but nothing more than we would expect.

Is this working right or have we done something really stupid. I tried opening the Frame Rate Converter. but it wouldn’t open on these clips and appeared not to be needed.

    thx…Mason

I have run into this with 720P, 60fps. I can’t view from the viewer, but if I put the clip on the timeline it plays.

We’ve so far only used it with our 1080i DVCPRO HD camera, but a friend of mine mixes his HDV on a 720P timeline and there seems to be no issues. This is in FCP 5.0.2.

    John,

digitize your HDV clips using the HDV easy setup…edit them on an HDV timeline if you have several to put together, then when you have your HDV shots lined up copy them to your 720P timeline and render them there. We’ve found you get better quality by doing it this way rather than converting them to DVCPROHD at the beginning. It takes a little more render time, but I think, the quality you end up with is significantly better. We add about 20 points of sharpening to the HDV clips with luminosity checked, to get them to look their best,

It’s 5.0.2, and I’ve tried restarting and trashing preferences and neither seems to work.

Regarding timecode..If you lay down 10 or so seconds of bars and note what the timecode is at the end of the bars you can then use that as a reference in modify TC in FCP and have accurate timecode for that reel. Also if you paly to the end of the tape the camera will hold for a few moments the last timecode on the tape, which is also a reference point. We’ve been using this technique for rough cuts in the field with well over 1000 30 minute cassettes and it’s accurate to within a few frames.
