I’m commencing on a project where I’ll be offlining all the HDV and Varicam on SD DV (which will be simple enough)

but how do I incorporate both formats together in the HD online suite? Should I dub all the HDV tapes to Varicam and then downconvert everything to DV for the offline? Is it even possible to do a decent dubs from HDV to Varicam?

    John,

digitize your HDV clips using the HDV easy setup…edit them on an HDV timeline if you have several to put together, then when you have your HDV shots lined up copy them to your 720P timeline and render them there. We’ve found you get better quality by doing it this way rather than converting them to DVCPROHD at the beginning. It takes a little more render time, but I think, the quality you end up with is significantly better. We add about 20 points of sharpening to the HDV clips with luminosity checked, to get them to look their best,

So then in theory, I could just bring by z1 camera into the Varicam online suite, hook up the firewire cable and have the editor batch capture the HDV into final cut using HDV easysetup, then switch back to the varicam easysetup (at which point the HDV would become unrendered) and hit render on the varicam sequence. How bout that?

My problem is that the HDV will be intercut with the varicam. This seems like it might best cut my time in the online suite.

Will there be any resizing of field rendering issues putting HDV into a Varicam sequence?

We’ve so far only used it with our 1080i DVCPRO HD camera, but a friend of mine mixes his HDV on a 720P timeline and there seems to be no issues. This is in FCP 5.0.2.
