I’ve gotten GREAT results with MBE – you have to finess all of the settings in order get the results you’re after.
Since you’re not using the identical footage they’re using in the demo’s it’s obvious the results will look different.

So, play around with the filter and you’ll be amazed at the looks you can create.

Having said that, yes, MBE is a slow renderer.

Here’s the way I believe the work-flow would run:

1. Rip the PAL DVD to a PAL QuickTime clip with DVDxDV.com [not free, but great] or MPEG-streamclip [free, also good].

2. Bring the PAL QT clip into FCP.

3. Use Nattress Standards Converter to convert the clip to NTSC [see Nattress.com for instructions]

4. Import your new NTSC clip into your DVD program, and burn it as an NTSC DVD.

5. Grab a cup of coffee.

6. Enjoy.

Um, why can’t you just record the guy with a regular microphone and then EQ the sound to sound AS IF he’s on the phone???

Don’t know about what timeline you should be using, but I can recommend that you rip your DVD’s to QT with http://www.DVDxDV.com – rather than going the analog route you suggested. It’s a fantastic program that is pretty fast – and not too expensive.
Apparently MPEGStreamclip is free and works well, too.
