Try playing around with the “Dab” controls.
Set Dab scatter to about 2 and Spacing to 0-1. Play around with the shift and angle as well…this will help achieve a less smooth look with the brush.

There are most likely both BCC 5 and BCC 6 plugs installed into the Media Core folder. Look in the folder paths below and remove BCC5 if you find them:
Mac:
Mac HD>Library>Application Support>Adobe>Common>Plug-ins>
>MediaCore PC:
C:\Program Files>Adobe>Common>Plug-ins>
>MediaCore -

Unfortunately I don’t have any recommendations for you.
It seems you would want the tools your editor needs to get the job done.

The render time does seem pretty excessive.
What else do you have going on in the project?
What graphics card and driver version are you running on the machine?
What’s the OS and the exact version of Avid FX?

If FX 9 has what you need why switch, especially when an FX 9 license is only half your budget($299)?
