Here’s a good article on just this subject: https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/when_to_stay_native.html

Personally, I’d capture 10bit Uncompressed if you can handle it.

Thanks Gary! I have been looking for a device that will let me capture video, audio, and timecode over one HD-SDI cable and I had called AJA about the IoHD before it was released. I think they were hesitant to say flat out “Yes, it does that” because of the FCP limitation, so thank you for spelling it out.

Try hitting “W” a few times and see what happens. If nothing changes after 1 press, press it 2 more times

You should be able to do this with Automator:
    Open Automator
Click on “Finder” in the Library Window on the left side
From the “Action” window, drag “Get Specified Server” to the workflow area (open space on the right side)
Click the “+” that appears in the worflow and Select the server
From the “Action” window drag “Connect to Servers” below “Get Specified Servers” in the workflow view.

    Save the Workflow.

Make sure the server is unmounted and then press the big play button in the top right to see if it works. If it does, go to “file>Save As…” and save it as an Application.

Now, to make it do this when you log in, click on the blue Apple in the top right of the finder window and go to system preferences.

    Choose “Accounts”
Go to your user account, click on “Log in Items” and add your new application to the list (by clicking on the “+” and going to where you saved it).

Keep in mind if you do this and the drive is not able to be mounted (not turned on, not available, etc.) it will probably take a long time for you to be able to log in to your account.

A better idea might be to mount the disk like you usually do and then drag it’s icon to the dock. If you have saved the password to your Keychain, it will mount it by clicking on it from the Dock

Sorry… I think I’m bitter about not being able to install 10.5 because AE won’t be ready for a while. I’m trying to convince myself I don’t need it!

[msacci] “I think this feature alone is worth $130.”

I dunno, I put together the same thing for free using Automator and iCal in 10.4. Of course, my version doesn’t include any Star Trek graphics…

“And how do I create offline media to recapture with no audio attached”

Make the Clip Offline. (Ctrl+click in the browser choose it from pop up).
Once you have an offline clip (this also works if you have a list of logged clips that you have not captured yet) you can ctrl+click on them in the browser and select “Clip Properties…”. There you can adjust the number of audio tracks that will be displayed in your FCP project.

Oddly even if you set this to 0 audio tracks, it will still capture all 16, but in the project that you use to capture it will appear to have no audio. If you import the captured clip into another project it will import with 16 all audio tracks.

Typically before I digitize I do this to make sure I only have the audio tracks that I need. I switch presets too often to go through and click each track off in the log and capture window.

The edit controls in the Edit to Tape window work IF you have your sequence loaded into the Viewer window, not the Canvas (timeline).

You have to drag and drop your sequence into the Viewer, then you can use the Insert and Assemble coontrols.

  • I’ve been running in to this too when going from 720p60 to NTSC. I think the problem arrises when you have a clip that starts on a * frame (like 1:00:02:00*, for example) When that happens the audio seems to be off by a frame.

I’ve been working on :30 spots so I’ve ben fixing it manually. I would suggest bouncing out an aiff from your HD timeline if you can’t go through each shot.
