Time Machine is the backup program integrated into Leopard. Here is what I have found so far:
    1) By default it only backs up your boot drive. It can back up other drives but it may not see them right away- it may take a restart or two.
    2) It is very easy to use. If you add an external drive it immediately asks if you want to use it for backup. It uses the Finder for an interface.
    3) It does not compress files. This is good in that it makes finding files easier. It bad in that you need more storage. I would recommend that your backup drive be at least twice the size of the files to be backed up. For example, if you have a fairly full 250gb drive, buy at least a 500gb backup drive.
    4) Time Machine plays nice with most other apps. I have noticed no significant degradation of Final Cut’s performance while Time Machine is backing up.
    5) Time Machine does not play nice with other backup programs. Retrospect , for example, will not back up to the same disk that Time Machine uses.
    6) Backup is slow. Expect your first backup to be an overnight process. It is much quicker after that as later backups are incremental.

I think this feature alone is worth $130. Funny thing it automatically saw and added my external array to the backup list. After I launched the array and came back a couple hours later time machine was telling me there was not enough room on my BU drive. Deselected the array and time machine finished with my system drive.

The speed that I seemed to be getting was 1GB/3mins. This is with going from internal to internal drive in my Mac Pro. My theory in the indexing of the files is what takes so long.

I think the 2 to 1 drive capacity is a good suggestion.

I dunno, I put together the same thing for free using Automator and iCal in 10.4. Of course, my version doesn’t include any Star Trek graphics…

Okay, how about $12.99 for the app and $117 for the graphics. 🙂

Just conveying I really like it.

Sorry… I think I’m bitter about not being able to install 10.5 because AE won’t be ready for a while. I’m trying to convince myself I don’t need it!

    Have you tried it?

I have, and it Does, infact I didn’t have 1 problem with it other than slightly sub optimal render times. I haven’t tried everything, but a messed around an exported a comp from ae7 that I had made.

With our business and heavy deadlines, there is no way I’m going to install Leopard and After Effects until Adobe has their updates ready.

A simple comp on one machine is one thing, a 250 layered, 60 second Animation for a network show is another. I need to trust that AE will not crash and choke during 14 continuous days of work and then render that animation out.

So no, I have not tried this and really don’t encourage anyone else who is working professionally to try it either.

You don’t quite honestly. We’ve installed Leopard on our internet and mail computers, but none of our production systems.

Like you we’re waiting for Adobe and Apple to update their software before moving ahead. that’s the smart course for anyone working professionally and making a living off their systems like I am.
