Very helpful info. Thanks for replying.
I’ve been having some wishful thinking, hoping Sony A7s Mark III will feature 10 bit internal recording when they release it… but my guess is no. I’ve owned an Atomos before – I ended up selling it and using Magic Lantern instead. I loved the atomos but my 5Dm2 didn’t put out a 1080p signal and didn’t like lugging extra equipment around.
I’m curious, when down sampling 4k to 1080p… perhaps the 10-bit it not necessary? I have no idea how my software (Sony Vegas) downsamples / what it does. I see in project settings I can select 32 bit. I’m not exactly sure what that 32 bit pertains to? I feel as though, Resolve is the master at this stuff, but again, ug, I don’t want to bring it into my workflow. I played with it and took some simple classes and feel it rendered absolutely beautiful colors. I did a few projects in it taking the RAW 14bit stuff from my 5d and rendering it to clips to stich together in Vegas.
I honestly don’t believe in 4k video, mainly feel it’s a marketing gemik to sell TV(s) and video discs. So I most always render to 1080p for my purposes anyways. Maybe I don’t need a 10bit camera in that regard – if always down sampling from 4k?

Thanks for your kind words. It seems I had to go into windows and enable compatibility mode for the application. Took a while but was finally able to get through to Magix.

Thanks, I’ll have to post my gripes in there. Honestly, there’s so many bugs and issues with VP16, I may have to litterally toss it out the window. Right now isn’t even previewing text tracks. The eye dropper tool no longer works with the plug-ins. The resolution is HORRIBLE. They advertised it’s better, optimised for 4k display (which I have), it’s far worse… Timeline event video icons are massively pixilated. I tried contacting customer support. It only took me 30 minutes to find an email for them. Nobody replied. The vendors who gave plug-ins with previous VP packages no longer honor licenses for VP 16. It’s a mess. I thought it would be a good move, especially since I hear they sorted out h.265 issues, but I’ve not even made it far enough to test that. Sigh 🙁

I’m wondering if it’s because I used a network path when I reopened the veg project.
I built a NAS, and hadn’t mapped all the drives. Then I copied the project when I was done with it to the NAS on an un-mapped drive. I then realised I should test some edits on that project. It couldn’t find any of the files despite the directory structure was the same just different drive.
I’m going to map the drive and try it again.
PS. Is it just me, or does Vegas leave you like 90% satisfied with every upgrade? They boasted higher resolution editing environment but my timeline thumbnails look like witness protection pixilation. I cannot even tell what is there.

super helpful. Many thanks. I am interested in using the h.265 capabilities of my drones, and other cameras when they support that. You have a beast of a machine! Wow, wish I had money for those processors ☺
I may have to jump to the vegas 15 do you have any clue when they plan to release 16? I’d imagine pretty soon no?

That makes since. Maybe there is some hope that SVP15 will have better hardware support? You’re absolutely right my days as an engineer, most of the systems in hardware go unused it takes a very long time for software to catch up. Sometimes they never do… and hardware never gets taken full advantage of.
I get the impression Adobe is a bit better at this than Vegas? I just don’t like the idea of subscription although I’ve probably paid more to vegas in upgrades.

James, you’ve got me thinking of this post again ☺ I came back to re-read it. Getting annoyed in that, I cannot edit h.265 timeline is completely glitchy. I’d have to use proxy files. Also if I add any amount of plugins the timeline crashes.
I’m not sure what my bottleneck is, the graphics cards or the processor. I have 64gb RAM. Fastest drives possible for the day, speed test prior in the this post.
My graphics card is a Radeon RX480 w/ 8gb ram.
My processor is an intel i7-5930k 3.5GHRZ 6coresI’d been looking at i7 extreme processor 10 core setup. However, that kind of money is a little ridiculous if I’m not sure it solves the problem. I’m amazed to see this hardware hasn’t dropped in price, the graphics card actually went up in price.
I contacted Magics the new owners of Vegas Pro. They’d not supply me any specs on what works / what their software developers use to test the software on. I was rather annoyed. Obviously my $4,000 machine isn’t strong enough but far surpasses their minimum specs. They keep pushing for upgrade to SV15 but I’m reluctant if I have the same issues there.
Any further information on what works best for SVP?

September 25, 2017 at 10:04 pm in reply to: SVP14 H.265 Very Poor Performance PerformanceFinally a real answer. I’d figured it might be something to this effect. I wanted Magix’s support to pass my question onto the software engineers and ask them what hardware does work for h.265 but such luck. I hate to purchase a massively expensive processor just to learn it doesn’t work either.
I just tried the trial version of Vegas Pro 15. No further enhancements in h.265 from what I could see. I guess we’re just too close to the cutting edge of this codec to learn much more on what works / what doesn’t?
I simply went back to h.264. Would love to use proxies but workflow appears to be a PITA so kind of avoiding it at all costs. I use proxies with RAW footage simply because I cannot get Vegas Pro to take Cinima DNG sequences (maybe you know how to do that?)
THanks a million for your help. Very much appreciated 🙂
