After several weeks of emailing back and forth with Magixs I have given up. Their suggestion was to use Proxies ☹

My final question was, do you have any hardware you have tested that works with h.265. I am still awaiting response on that message. My thinking is the decoder for Vegas Pro h.265 remains to be optimized.

I see Premier Pro has support and am reading good things about it. Hate to switch though as I have thousands invested in software packages for a Vegas workflow.

Anybody else have luck with Vegas h.265 performance?

On another note, I don’t know why none of these NLE’s have a proxy setup where you can simply click render from proxies folder or render from originals when creating your final output.

Tech support at Magix is assisting. Hopefully we can get it figured out.

I tested various h.265 clips downloaded from the web. Seems issue is not isolated to a few cameras / metadata… but rather the h.265 decoder itself as all clips behaved similarly in vegas.

I also contacted DJI to see if they updated their metadata and or h.265 encoder. They have not.

Will keep you apprised of what I find out.

I think we may have arrived at similar points. I read something where premiere will not handle a lens profile in the metadata and was throwing premiere for loop too. I am not shy to dive into editing the metadata ☺ thanks for that post i will give it a whirl.

Worse comes to worse i will shoot in h.264. I know that works fine.

    Thx btw p4p is highly rec9mmended 🙂

I just finished trying a MP4 container for h.265. Vegas won’t allow me to add the clip to the timeline.

I have a theory but unsure how to fix / test. I had VLC player on my editing machine. VLC player will not play h.265 it has the same issue as vegas. I was woundering if Vegas is using the VLC decoder to run timeline playback. I uninstalled VLC player but not sure if it removed the codecs.

How does one know what codecs / DLL(s) vegas is pulling from ?

Thanks for the help and things to test. Didn’t seem to have much of an effect. Here’s what I got:

    1. 32-bit floating point: Tried with 32-bit video levels & 8 bit. No performance difference for either
    2. Bit depth captured in:8-bits
    3. GPU Acceleration OFF: I turned it off. All the non h.265 clips suffer, but h.265 clips play about the same. My theory is the encoder / decoder for SVP is not utilising the GPU…. Why I have no idea ☹
    4. Try with MOV files: I have captured everything in MOV container. Will test MP4 when I get a chance.

I’m considering trans coding the h.265 to perhaps ProRes or NDxHD. Is this a good idea? What would be another container they could be put in that wouldn’t throw out quality?

Of course I’d rather just fix SVP if I can 🙁

I already tried that. It had no effect… when i started the project i told it to match the project settings to that clip. I later reduced the project resolution :/

I see several data points you need me to collect to troubleshoot. Let me know if I got what you mentioned. Thanks a million for the help.

Quite note, the entire timeline lags even if I have lower quality videos, that normally play well in a timeline (e.g. h.264 1080p). It doesn’t matter where I playback from, a point in the timeline with lower quality clip or the h.265 clip. Also the project renders fine… It’s just timeline playback that suffers.

    1. Project Settings

    2. Information on Media

January 21, 2017 at 8:33 pm in reply to: Sharpening in Camera Versus Sharpening in Vegas

Thanks a million for cleaning that up. I think I understand the just of your workflow philosophy. Do what you can do in camera, then the rest in post. That, sharpness cannot be removed, can only be added. But there may be a sweet point in the camera for sharpness setting.

I have a bit of a jury-rigged setup, it’s a Canon 5d Mark II with Atomos Field Recorder, playing with NDxHD and ProRes. I did have my sharpness at lowest setting. I think I may try bumping it up. I’m not to familiar with other codecs other than h.264 which isn’t too exciting to me.

I had been setting custom color temperatures for each shoot, and color correcting if needed in post. I have since begun relying more on the auto white balance. It seems to work very well in camera, very rarely needing corrected in post.

The short of it, I’m going to start testing shoots with a little bit more in camera sharpness added in. I think you’re onto something there. There must be a sweet spot on the sensor concerning sharpness, much below that an it’s maybe degrading the footage, at least in the Canon 5d setup.

Very helpful info none the less. Thanks for sharing your experience with the RX480.

I had similar thoughts… I guess with a little time the future will tell as software and drivers better support the newer hardware. It was very trippy though seeing less equipped boarders selling for much more. The machine renders video like a beast. It renders faster than the length of it’s timeline in many circumstances. Sometimes full quality timeline playback is a little glitchy though. I always watch these studios playback their timelines in Youtube tutorials and think… “am I the only one that cannot playback a timeline without dropping frames?” They must have $10,000 editing machines LOL

On the note of single card width graphics cards… My friend built a BUNCH of bitcoin machines. He bought some adapter and was able to plug in a BUNCH of graphics cards. They didn’t plug into the motherboard. The adapter broke them out and they plugged in to a chasis he built. It was pretty cool.

He preferred the 290x… but this was a couple years ago. Then bitcoin crashed. I had bought my older 7800 card from him. He had a 290x which I should have bought but the 7800 seemed to reder video quite well at the time I bought it.

Thanks for sharing the post. I think this will be valuable for future people interested in building a Vegas Pro Machine. There was VERY little info of ANY help online.

Aaron, you are SUPER helpful, massive understatement ☺ Here are the scores from my tests you mentioned in previous post.

Here is an extra one I ran with Crystal Disk Mark

I am still super confused on if the Fury X would have made any difference with the timeline playback.

H.264 transcoding makes since as that stuff is so highly compressed. I noticed my higher bitrate (less compressed) 5dm2 footage had no troubles playing back with effects. It was my nasty Samsung S6 footage that dropped frames on timeline playback.

What is this a sign of? CPU or GPU power? I think you’re leaning towards CPU power?
