    The shots on the sports field with the red t-shirt look like they were taken in fairly low light and some cloud, so they’re not as crisp as most of the other footage, but a bit blurry and dull/flat. It’s probably similar for the shot on the fenced bridge.

    If possible, you need to re-shoot that take under similar lighting conditions as the rest of the footage. Other than that, it looks good.

  • In Vegas Movie Studio 10, I can use the * key to add a default transition (dissolve) to the start of a single video event or to the end of the clip.

    However, if I trim the end of the event so that it is shorter, the * key no longer works to add a dissolve at the end. If I trim the start, the * key still adds a dissolve at the start.

    Possibly a bug?

  • You can add FADES to the edges of an event. These are the same as crossfades to black.

    Just move the mouse over the top left or right corner of an event until the cursor changes to a little quarter-circle, and drag to set the fade length.

    Also search for Event Fade in the Vegas help.

    No, rendering each time you apply a linear envelope will give exactly the same non-linear speed ramp as nesting linear envelopes, except of course the image quality will suffer due to the repeated re-render.

    You need to use an envelope shape that, when multiplied by itself several times, results in a straight line… ie for a total of 2700% increase (300% x 300% x 300%) you would need 3 velocity envelopes that each form a cube root, which looks like the plot here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cube_root

    You can try approximating this curve with one of the non-linear keyframe types in Vegas, or manually draw keyframes that approximate this curve and see if the resulting overall speed ramp looks about right.

    The problem with nesting linear velocity envelopes is that the end result will never be linear. If you nest 2 linear envelopes, you’ll get a square-law result, 3 envelopes will give you cubic, and so on. They’re not strictly logarithmic or exponential, but are still a curve increase that starts gradually and then gets quicker and quicker.

    You can experiment with using some linear and some log envelopes to equalise the resultant envelope into an approximately linear one. You may have to use some keyframes to get the correct result. The individual envelopes need to ramp up relatively quickly to start with, then flatten out.

    That’s 873×480 for 16:9 widescreen. Using the same calculation method, 4:3 NTSC would require 655×480 pixels for still images with square pixels.

    You have accidentally enabled “Ripple Edit”. Press Ctrl+L or click the icon on the toolbar that looks like a left arrow above two video events.

    GSpot is probably getting confused about the frame rate – Nokia’s specs say 640×480 at up to 30fps.

    Are you seeing interlacing artifacts (thin horizontal lines, or “combing”) or frame blending (ghosting where one frame appears to be semi-transparently superimposed on the next)?

    Frame blending (aka resampling) occurs when the frame rates of the source and output are different. It’s mostly noticeable with fast motion or panning.

    You can stop this with the “disable resample” option. Try dropping the MP4 clips into a project that is set up as PAL DV, and right-click on each video event and select Switches > Disable Resample. The output video might be a little bit jerky but the blending will not occur.

  • You can almost certainly do the “disable resample” with Vegas scripting, but I don’t know much about that as I only use Movie Studio.

    I think you can do the “disable resample” globally by selecting all video (anim GIF) events with the selection tool, and right-click > disable resample. Make sure you don’t also have any audio selected or you won’t get the resample options on the context menu.

  • How are you creating the source animation? As an animated GIF?

    I notice that the frame display time in the sample GIF varies from frame to frame, and none of the delays correspond to normal video frame rates.

    If you need to keep creating the animation in this way, then you can get around the ghosting problem quite easily in Vegas, but with the possible drawback of slight stutter in the animation.

    Just drop the animation file into your Vegas project (set up for 25fps progressive), right-click on the event and select Switches > Disable Resample. That will turn off the resampling that Vegas performs by default in an effort to fill in gaps in the video when the frame rates do not match.

    I just tried that on your sample, rendered to a 640x480x25p MP4 and it looked fine.
