  • Interlaced video causing flicker

Posted by Ben Welsher on September 16, 2011 at 4:43 pm

    Hi all,
I have used Vegas 11 to produce a MPEG2 file for burning to DVD.
However when I use DVD Architect to create the DVD on playing back through
a DVD player the video flickers, especially during motion.
The MPEG2 file is 25fps PAL, 720×576 and interlaced and I think it is
the interlacing that is causing the problem.
I’m not even certain that 25i is acceptable DVD spec so not sure where
    to go from here.
    Any suggestions welcomed!

    Exactly.
Render your media as MPEG2 29fps
(or just use the default MPEG2 DVD NTSC setting).
    Where are you located?

I’m in the UK, hence my choosing PAL.
I can try rendering it as NTSC/29i as you suggest,
modern TVs are fairly tolerant of differing TV standards I believe?

25fps interlaced is the PAL standard for UK/Europe systems. What is the original footage format? If it’s also 25i from a standard-def or hi-def source then you shouldn’t get interlacing artifacts.

Make sure your project settings match the frame rate and interlace settings, and use the PAL DVD presets for the MainConcept MPEG2 codec when you render.

The original footage is from a Nokia N86 mobile phone.
Gspot gives the fps as around 60/sec but isn’t very clear,
I have done a gspot export if you want to take a look.

GSpot is probably getting confused about the frame rate – Nokia’s specs say 640×480 at up to 30fps.

Are you seeing interlacing artifacts (thin horizontal lines, or “combing”) or frame blending (ghosting where one frame appears to be semi-transparently superimposed on the next)?

Frame blending (aka resampling) occurs when the frame rates of the source and output are different. It’s mostly noticeable with fast motion or panning.

You can stop this with the “disable resample” option. Try dropping the MP4 clips into a project that is set up as PAL DV, and right-click on each video event and select Switches > Disable Resample. The output video might be a little bit jerky but the blending will not occur.

It wouldn’t appear to be either, it’s more of jerkiness that gets worse when the camera is moving around quite a bit. Perhaps the best way I can describe is as if there aren’t as many frames as there were in the source material and the video isn’t as smooth as a result.
