  • I use shuffle occasionally (I’m sure it’s mentioned somewhere in the help, but somewhere you probably wouldn’t expect), but it almost never does exactly what I want.

If you drag an event back in time (towards the start) the events in between the old and new positions all move forward in time, and vice versa. The events in between sometimes end up butted together or split apart.

I just enable ripple, make a space for the event to move into, then disable ripple and do the move.

  • Try just changing the dimensions of the existing generated media to match the new project settings – width and height are specified in the top of the generated media edit window.

Have you been experimenting with Levels or Broadcast Colors filters?

You might have accidentally dropped an effect on the output video bus or on a track, and that’s affecting all or many of your video events.

You might have mistakenly docked it into one of the docking areas on the Vegas window, in which case it’ll probably appear as a tab alongside Project Media, Explorer, Transitions etc.

You might have accidentally dragged it off the bottom of the screen under the Windows taskbar. It can be recovered by hiding the taskbar (right-click taskbar and select Properties, and enable autohide) and dragging the window back up where it belongs.

What codec did you use when saving the video out of Virtualdub? If you used “Uncompressed”, then you will end up with a huge file which might not play smoothly simply because it can’t be read from disk quickly enough. Try one of the edit-friendly codecs like Cineform (if you have it), MJPEG, Lagarith, HuffYUV…

This is for Movie Studio HD 10, but probably applies to Vegas Pro too…

I find that the Preview/Good/Best Full settings all have interlacing in the preview and therefore in any snapshots you take.

Draft>Full seems to give an interpolated full frame for a clean snapshot, but it might be a bit soft.

Does this happen for any video or still image file?

Make sure you haven’t mistakenly muted the video master/output or selected to preview on an external monitor.

It sounds like you are trying to render out your video by selcting Project > Save As. This will only save the Vegas project, not render out video.

To render, select Project > Render As, and then you’ll be able to choose from all the usual formats/codecs.

The key word here might be “Media FX”…

Did you apply Media FX, as distinct from Event FX or Track FX ?

If yes, then those FX apply to the media item itself, so everywhere you use that media item, it will have the same FX applied. This could be color correction on a particular video clip, for example.

If you want FX on a single instance of that media (ie an Event on the timeline), then apply Event FX. If you want all events on a particular track to have the same FX, then apply Track FX. If you want all events in the project to have the same FX (eg broadcast colors), then apply Output FX.

EDIT John kinda beat me to it… 🙂

  • The A/B track layers can still be viewed in Movie Studio 10 (and I guess Pro 10, dunno about VMS or Pro 11). Just right-click a video track header, and select Expand Track Layers. Sequential events are shown on the A and B layers alternately, with the transitions marked between the 2 layer lanes.

It’s still not 2 separate tracks, but it might make transitions easier to manage.

I’m glad to hear that my idea is working for you. I needed to do the same kind of thing on a wedding video for which I had footage from several cameras, and some was noticeably lower quality than the rest.

I haven’t done any green-screen or masking/tracking work so can’t advise much on that, sorry. There are a few others here who know more about it though.
