  • Audio no Video on timeline/preview

Posted by Neal Evans on November 14, 2011 at 5:46 pm

I am using sony vegas 10. Here is my problem. When I drag an mpg file into trimmer all is fine. video and audio play OK. When I move this video to the timeline, I get audio and the thumbnails, but no video on the video channel. I am also only able to save this file as a .veg .txt or .aaf. the file’s properties are: MPEG2 29.97 fps interlaced 720x480x32.

After a lot of searching I can’t seem to find an answer anywhere. Codec? setting?

    Help please

If I’m getting you right, You have video playing in the trimmer and the little preview there plays fine. Then you drag it to the timeline and the video clip right ubove it doesn’t play in the thumbmail. Once the video in on the timeline, it’s viewed in the main preview window. If you don’t see it or have accenedtly hid it, select view from the top, Windows layouts and select default layout. You should have your preview window back and that plays video from the timeline. I hope this helps, Danny Hays

Not quite right. A and V play in the trimmer fine. I drag the clip into the timeline and I get:

track 1 Video – shows thumbnails
track 2 audio – audio shows
Blank video channel – nothing shows
Master Audio channel – which shows audio levels

When I play this timeline I hear audio, but no video is displayed in the preview window and I can only save this clip as .veg .txt .aaf.

I did set the Windows layouts to default layout as suggested with no change.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Does this happen for any video or still image file?

Make sure you haven’t mistakenly muted the video master/output or selected to preview on an external monitor.

It sounds like you are trying to render out your video by selcting Project > Save As. This will only save the Vegas project, not render out video.

To render, select Project > Render As, and then you’ll be able to choose from all the usual formats/codecs.

Ok..I went to project>render as and changed the file format to avi and template over to 1080yuv. The video showed up and played. Now when I import a video it comes up and plays in the preview monitor as it should. I suppose i reset some default setting somehwere when I did the project>render as.

    Consider this problem solved.

    Thank You!
